You Are Still My Sunshine

A short story by: Mikaella L. Daquiz

One morning, a senior high school student named Arrietty just woke up and getting
ready for her school, it was a rainy day so Arrietty’s mood is happy, she doesn’t know why she’s
always happy while raining, she can find her peace of mind on rain. So, when she’s ready, the
rain stops for a while and she and rides on the school bus so she can go to the school
immediately. While she’s walking to go inside the school, the rain is starting to fall, so she run as
fast as she can, because she doesn’t have an umbrella. On the classroom, she just shocked when
she saw her teacher, she looks at her watch, she’s late 10 minutes.
“Sorry ma’am, I’m late” she apologized.
Her teacher just give nod on her. She exhales.
“It’s okay, I understand that you’re late because it’s raining. We are on signal number 2, so no
class suspense”. The teacher said.
She entered the room and sit on her chair.
Minutes later while the teacher is discussing, a not familiar boy student just came with one
teacher of the school.
“Ms. Lazaro, please excuse us for a moment” the teacher said.
“Yes, Mr. Hernandez? Class what are you going to say?” Ms. Lazaro said
All the students just stand up. “Good morning Mr. Hernandez” all the students said and sit down
again.
“Good morning to you all too. So, Ms. Lazaro, this is Kyle Ferrer, a transferee student from
Galaxy Academy. The principle decided to put him on this section, it is alright Ms. Lazaro?” Mr.
Hernandez said.
“Yes, of course… So, Kyle you are very welcome to this section, you may sit down, whenever
you want” Ms. Lazaro said to Kyle with a smile.
“I’m so gladly ma’am” Kyle said and smile.
The murmuring of the student just begins, because Kyle is a good-looking boy and
he’s tall, so he really looks attractive. Many girls are offering him to sit down next to them and
other boys in the classroom teasing him jokily. And Kyle just smirking to them… Arrietty just
staring at him while he’s walking and finding a vacant chair.
“Can I sit next to you?” Kyle said to Arrietty but she blushed and don’t know what to do, for her
it was really fast.
“Huh? Ah! Yeah, sure” she’s stammering, and Kyle just sit down on the chair.
The other girls just silently talking about that.
After class, it’s still raining and Arrietty is waiting for the school bus, even she wants
to go home quickly, it can’t be because she needs to wait for the bus, and, she has no umbrella...
The other students just leave the school. Arrietty is waiting in the waiting shed. While she’s
looking at the ground where the rain drops falling, she heard a voice, so she looks up and saw
Kyle, she just wondered.
“I heard the bus can’t pick up students because it’s in the repair shop, they said the 2 wheels of it
were got flat……Oh I just heard that from faculty, because I was there, um just for my few
requirements” Kyle explained to Arrietty who’s until now wondering.
“Oh, Ah. Um okay, I’ll go, and um thank you for the information.” Arrietty said with
stammering voice.
She’s about to run but Kyle called her that makes her heart beats fast.
“Arrietty! Wait” he said. And Arrietty slowly turn around.
“Yes?” she said. And she really shocked on what Kyle next do. He grabs her wrist in a quick to
make her sheltered, because the rain’s still pouring, and he don’t know why Arrietty leave while
raining.
“Don’t you see? Still raining” Kyle said, and he slowly released her hand.
“You can have my umbrella if you want” Kyle offers his umbrella to Arrietty
“Ah! Yeas please. I’m going to give this back to you tomorrow. Sorry for this, okay? I’ll go”
Arrietty said in a fast speaking, and she opened the umbrella and run away. But Kyle speaks
again.
“Wait!” he said that makes Arrietty turn around again.
“Is your mind changed? Okay, here’s your umbrella” Arrietty said and she’s about to give the
umbrella back to Kyle, but he stopped her.
“Oh! No, no, if I can be a Sun, I already wipes out the rain for you” Kyle said that makes
Arrietty shocked and blushed.

In that moment, their friendship has started…They know what each other’s likes and
dislikes, birthdays, houses, some secrets of their lives, favorite colors, foods, places, and a lot.
 Years later, they finally graduated in college. Arrietty graduated on the course
education, and Kyle in business management. Arrietty have already feelings for Kyle but she’s
afraid to admit it because she doesn’t want to be rejected. And now they are graduated, she
promised herself to confess her feelings to Kyle and she’ll accept what will be the result of her
confessing. And if she got rejected, she will go and study to the abbey to become a nun.

“Hey buddy dude!” Arrietty said to Kyle that now is really smiling because finally now he is
graduated.
“Congrats bud!” Kyle said and hug Arrietty.
“Congratulations!!” Arrietty said while she’s started crying, just tears of joy.
“Don’t cry” Kyle said while laughing. He also wipes her tears. Arrietty laughs too.
“Kyle?” Arrietty said with a serious face.
“What is it, bud?” Kyle said
“I have feelings for you” Arrietty said with a serious sad face.
“What? You mean…...?” his voice is stammering too.
“Yes, Kyle. I love you” Arrietty’s tears just flowing from her eyes.
“Arrietty, sorry but, I don’t love you as my girl. I do love you just my best friend” Kyle said.
“Okay, at least now I confessed it. And it’s okay…... I think this is the last” Arrietty said and still
crying.
“What? No please Arrietty. I want our friendship never ends. I promised to myself that you will
be the first girl I want to take on the plane, except for my mom” Kyle said
“Sorry but you already rejected me, and I understand you, and I respect you. So, I’m leaving
now. Thank you for everything, Kyle” Arrietty said and hug Kyle and just run away.
“I hope I still your sunshine, Arrietty” Kyle said and start tearing.

Five years later.

Arrietty become a nun. And she focused on her study inside the rectory and at first, she
experienced so hard, but then she used to it. One time all the nun of their rectory assigned to visit
Vatican and see St. Francis… One the plane, Arrietty just remember Kyle, she’s thinking if he’s
now an already pilot.
“Ladies and gentlemen. This is Captain Kyle Ferrer, good afternoon. We’ve already started our
descent procedure into Vatican Heliport. We expect to land at 9:45 am tomorrow. We wish you a
pleasant stay in Vatican City and we hope to see you again very soon. On behalf of all our crew,
thank you for choosing our company as your airline today” the captain said, and Arrietty just
shocked and she noticed herself that she’s starting crying. Because she didn’t expect that Kyle is
the pilot of the plane where she is sitting.
She doesn’t want to talk to Kyle anymore, she is happy now for what they are now. Even she’s a
nun today, she kept Kyle to her heart.
“You are still my sunshine, Kyle” Arrietty said to her mind.
