WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT
1st Quarter Report < Bt,
July/August/Sept. 2021 y
Presented by:
Chief David SquiresWrightsville Beach Police Department
Quarterly Report Executive Summary
FY 2021-2022 Q1
(July-September)
Crime Report
As 2 combined total, Group A&B offenses were 22% down from the previous quarter while they
were 18% up from the same quarter last year. When looking at previous (pre pandemic years)
our total Group A&B offenses is still significantly down. The last four quarters show 1,003
combined offenses while 2019 had 1435.
We saw a decrease in destruction/vandalism offenses (more than 50% when compared to the
previous quarter and also the same quarter last year). We do note an increase in aggravated
assaults (7 compared to 4 in the previous quarter). While this is concerning, we are happy with
our latent investigations, charging offenders in the majority of these cases (5 out of 7) and
working to develop a more proactive posture with respect to assaults in the bar district.
With respect to ordinance enforcement, itis of interest to note that we saw an 18% increase in
total ordinance enforcement from the last quarter (8% decrease from same quarter last year).
Glass container violations were up dramatically (almost double the previous quarter). This is
likely related to the addition of a new ranger. Dog on the beach, noise, and open container
enforcement all appear to be in normal ranges.
Community Concerns
During this quarter, we were invited to meet with residents of Channel Walk/Lee’s Cut to
discuss their concerns (noise, litter, drunkenness associated with boaters around Palm Tree
Island). We dedicated some intermittent foot patrols in the area and worked with the NHC SO
to ensure an increase presence on the waters. The July 4" weekend went smoothly in this area.
We also worked closely with the NHC SO to prepare for the potential of protest associated with
a social media controversy related to the investigation of an assault that occurred on the beach
strand. The increased patrol presence was noted and appreciated by residents.
Progress Report.
We have noted some positive change with respect to citizens contacting the dispatcher when
they need police services. We have also noted some progress with citizens locking their doors
even when they are home. We are happy to report that we will again be fully staffed in the
coming weeks.
