CHAPTER 4

THE MASKED men led the three friends down a ladder and along a corridor. Soon
they were in a large room with a thick carpet and a table which was already set for
them. The men pushed them in and locked the door behind them.
"Let us out! You can't keep us in here!" shouted Ned Land. But nobody came. The
men were hungry and exhausted, so they sat at the table and enjoyed the delicious
food.
After they ate, they fell fast asleep. Many hours passed. When they woke up, they
saw there were new clothes for them in the room. Happily, they put them on. They
were made of strange material but they were very comfortable.
Then, suddenly, the door opened and a man appeared. He was tall with pale skin
and sharp black eyes.
"I am Capitan Nemo," he announced.
"And you are on board my ship, the Nautilus." He looked angry, but spoke gently.
"Why did you attack the Naitilus?" he asked.
"We thought it was a monster," said Ned.
"We had no idea it was an underwater ship," added Dr Aronnax.
"Now that you are here, I will treat you as guests," replied Captain Nemo. "But you
may never go on land again".
"What?" they all cried out. "We are free men! We cannot agree to that", said Dr
Aronnax.
"Well, you are my prisoners. You must do as I say", said Captain Nemo.
Dr Aronnax and the others realised they had no choice.
They followed the captain into a beautiful dining room.
"Please sit down and enjoy a good meal," said Captain Nemo. There was a great
variety of food, and this made Ned very happy.
"It's delicious!" he exclaimed.
"And all of it comes from the sea," said Nemo.
"All of it? But this is meat!" said Dr Aronnax. " Isn't it?" Nemo laughed.
"Yes," he said. "It's turtle. Try it, it tastes great!"
After lunch, they went into their cabins to rest. Later, Captain Nemo invited Dr
Aronnax to look around the Nautilus. It was beyond anything Dr Aronnax could
imagine. Captain Nemo took him into the library. It was a big room full of books on
every subject.
"This is magnificent," said Dr Aronnax.
"There must be at least six or seven thousand books here."
"Actually, Professor, there are twelve thousand. And you are free to use them."
Dr Aronnax was pleased with this generous offer. Captain Nemo then opened a
door and Dr Aronnax entered a very large, bright room. Dr Aronnax could not
believe his eyes.
On the walls, hung lots of paintings by great artists and around the room he saw
beautiful marble and bronze statues.
"This is a museum!" he told his host.
"I am glad you are pleased," replied Captain Nemo.
Everywhere he looked, Dr Aronnax was filled with surprise.
In a corner of the room there was a large organ. In the middle, a fountain poured
water into the shell of a giant clam. Around the fountain were precious treasures
from the sea inside glass cases.
"What you have shown me," Dr Aronnax said, "is absolutely wonderful."
"Ah, but there is more," Captain Nemo told him.
He went on to show Dr Aronnax the rest of the submarine, and told him how they
built it. He explained how the sea gave them everything, including electricity. Dr
Aronnax was amazed.
"You must be very rich to do all this," he told Captain Nemo.
"Yes, Professor. More than you could imagine," he answered.
 CAPITULO 4
Los hombres enmascarados condujeron a los tres amigos por una escalera y por
un pasillo. Pronto estuvieron en una habitación grande con una alfombra gruesa y
una mesa que ya estaba preparada para ellos. Los hombres los empujaron y
cerraron la puerta detrás de ellos.
"¡Déjanos salir! ¡No puedes retenernos aquí!" gritó Ned Land. Pero nadie vino. Los
hombres tenían hambre y estaban exhaustos, por lo que se sentaron a la mesa y
disfrutaron de la deliciosa comida.
Después de comer, se durmieron profundamente. Pasaron muchas horas. Cuando
se despertaron, vieron que había ropa nueva para ellos en la habitación.
Felizmente, se los pusieron. Estaban hechos de un material extraño pero eran
muy cómodos.
Entonces, de repente, la puerta se abrió y apareció un hombre. Era alto, de piel
pálida y ojos negros afilados.
"Soy el Capitán Nemo", anunció.
"Y estás a bordo de mi barco, el Nautilus". Parecía enojado, pero habló con
suavidad.
"¿Por qué atacaste a los Naitilus?" preguntó.
"Pensamos que era un monstruo", dijo Ned.
"No teníamos idea de que era un barco submarino", agregó el Dr. Aronnax.
"Ahora que está aquí, los trataré como invitados", respondió el capitán Nemo.
"Pero es posible que nunca más vuelvas a tierra".
"¿Qué?" todos gritaron. "¡Somos hombres libres! No podemos estar de acuerdo
con eso", dijo el Dr. Aronnax.
"Bueno, ustedes son mis prisioneros. Deben hacer lo que les digo", dijo el Capitán
Nemo.
El Dr. Aronnax y los demás se dieron cuenta de que no tenían otra opción.
Siguieron al capitán a un hermoso comedor.
"Por favor, siéntese y disfrute de una buena comida", dijo el capitán Nemo. Había
una gran variedad de comida y esto hizo que Ned se sintiera muy feliz.
"¡Es delicioso!" el exclamó.
"Y todo viene del mar", dijo Nemo.
"¿Todo? ¡Pero esto es carne!" dijo el Dr. Aronnax. "¿No es así?" Nemo rió.
"Sí", dijo. "Es tortuga. Pruébelo, ¡sabe delicioso!"
Después del almuerzo, se dirigieron a sus cabañas para descansar. Más tarde, el
Capitán Nemo invitó al Dr. Aronnax a mirar alrededor del Nautilus. Fue más allá de
todo lo que el Dr. Aronnax pudiera imaginar. El Capitán Nemo lo llevó a la
biblioteca. Era una gran sala llena de libros sobre todos los temas.
"Esto es magnífico", dijo el Dr. Aronnax.
"Debe haber al menos seis o siete mil libros aquí".
"En realidad, profesor, hay doce mil. Y es libre de usarlos".
El Dr. Aronnax estaba satisfecho con esta generosa oferta. El capitán Nemo abrió
una puerta y el Dr. Aronnax entró en una habitación muy grande y luminosa. El Dr.
Aronnax no podía creer lo que veía.
En las paredes, colgaron muchos cuadros de grandes artistas y alrededor de la
sala vio hermosas estatuas de mármol y bronce.
"¡Esto es un museo!" le dijo a su anfitrión.
"Me alegro de que esté satisfecho", respondió el capitán Nemo.
Dondequiera que mirara, el Dr. Aronnax estaba lleno de sorpresa.
En un rincón de la habitación había un gran órgano. En el medio, una fuente vertía
agua en el caparazón de una almeja gigante. Alrededor de la fuente había
preciosos tesoros del mar dentro de vitrinas.
"Lo que me ha mostrado", dijo el Dr. Aronnax, "es absolutamente maravilloso".
"Ah, pero hay más", le dijo el capitán Nemo.
Continuó mostrándole al Dr. Aronnax el resto del submarino y le contó cómo lo
construyeron. Explicó cómo el mar les daba todo, incluida la electricidad. El Dr.
Aronnax estaba asombrado.
"Debes ser muy rico para hacer todo esto", le dijo al capitán Nemo.
"Sí, profesor. Más de lo que pueda imaginar", respondió.
