(See Ng 4) SECTION 5 CALIBRATION The Model A-20 Digtzriscallrated typically to within + 50 feet straight line fit rom its highest and lowest reporting altitude using NIST traceable pressure standards. For most installations Ite or no ‘djustment ls necessary to match the Digitizer tothe altimeter. ‘Altimeters which are on the high or low side ofthe requirements of SO ¢-10b may require correspondance adjustment. FAR 91.217 requires that altitude Digitizers must be callbrated when Installed. FAR 91.413 requires cabration any time Installation or maintenance Is ‘performed ona Transponder/Digitzar system. CALIBRATION PROCEDURE 1. Calbration should be done with both the primary fight altimeter and Digitizer at the same amblent temperature within the range of #55 fo +95 degrees Fahronhalt (+15 (0 +35 degrees centigrade). Power supplied 0 the Digitizer should be of the same nominal voltage asthe aircraft buss voltage to which It ls tobe installed. The dglttzers are factory callbrated 421 14V nominal voltage, when calibrating using 24V buss voltage the Tactorycalbration wil be 100-200 fet off at sea level. 2. Apply power tothe Digitizer fora least § minutes before proceeding ‘with the calibration. 3. Determine the altitude fo which you willbe calbrating the encoder. ‘Supplied withthe Digtzer are four (4) altimeter placards. (See figure 6) 4. With the primary fight altimeter sotto 29.82 in hg, decrease the ‘system pressure suppliod by the pltot—static test sot unt the primary fight attimoter indicates 30 foot lower than the maximum altitude to whieh you ae calorating. 5. Check the code transition pont at this altitude and if required adjust the trim pot marked “H" unti the transition point ls ithin +50 fest of the primary fight altimeter with both increasing and decressing pressure, (See figure 5) 6. Increase system pressure unt the primary Night altimeter indicates +50 f00t.ifroquired adjust th trim pot marked "L" until th transition ‘point i within 10 feet of this altitude with both increasing and ‘decreasing pressure. 7. Repest stops 4 through 6 unt an accuracy of + 50 fet is obtained for oth increasing and decreasing pressure at both maximum calbration ‘stttude and 0 foot attude. 4. Insta a placard which corresponds to the maximum altitude to which the Digtizer was calbrated on the front center face ofthe primary fight altimeter. FAR 91.217 requires that a correspondence check be preformed. ‘AC43.68 provides guidance on acceptable methods fo accomplish this. Place the transponder in the alltude reporting mode to transmit altitude data. Model A-30 digitzors which transmit RS 232 data (mod 8 and above) provide continuous data to RS 232 devices. Tho air raffle control system standard allows for use of mode C attude Information that Is up {0 249 feet In error. properly functioning and callbrated Digitizer may report mode Calitude deviations of up fo 200 fet to ATC. This error ls result of @ number of factors present inthe ‘ireraft and ATC system All Digitizers report altitude based on standard pressure of 29.92 nH. {your airraft fs equipped with a transponder or other device that aisplays pressure alttude without barometric correction we recommend {hat regular periodie checks ofthe displayed altitude be made. To do this, sot the altimeter fo 29.92 n Hg and verify that the altitude dlsplay Indicates atitude that fe within 200 feet ofthe altimeter. ‘your aircraft ls equipped with 2 GPS or other device which displays ‘baromaticaly corrected altitude from the RS 232 data, set the altitude Correction the same for both the device and the altimeter. The elfference Inatitude indications should be less than 200 foot. {na altitude readout device is available inthe aircraft we recommend that the accuracy ofthe device be periodically verified wth ATC Controflar. Make sure thatthe alimeter barometric pressure is et to the proper value for your location. The altitude reported by the Controller and the altimeter indication should not deviate by more than 200 feet Air traffic controlors are required to very the accuracy of the Digitizor ‘bofore the altitude data can be used for separation of traffic. I notified ‘by a controler “alttude squawk deviates by numberof fet) stop ‘altitude squawk” this indleatos that your altimeter, Digitizer or transponder is malfunctioning and should be Inspected by a certied ropatr facility. Wan air waffle controler reports “no altitude squawk” the most Ikely problem is withthe sireraft transponder. The warm-up times listed in the specifications are for intial power up of the Digtzer. Ambient temperature isthe temperature fo which the Digitizer has subjected to prior fo warmup. SECTION 7 CONTINUING AIRWORTHINESS Thore are no periodtc continuing maintenance requirements forthe ‘model 30 Digitizer. Repair or service should performed when the Digitizer no longer meets the accuracy requirements. FAR regulations ‘roquire poriodle calbration when used for IF Might
