What is Mathematical Literacy

Mathematical literacy is a subject that is driven by mathematical applications and is related

to life that allows students to develop abilities and confidence in thinking numerically and
spatially, to interpret and analyze critically, and to solve a problem (DOE, 2003: 9).
Mathematical Literacy provides students with awareness and understanding of the role of
mathematics in the modern world

Mathematical literacy in the PISA study is defined as the capacity of individuals to formulate,
use and interpret mathematics in various contexts. It also includes making mathematical
deductions and applying mathematical concepts, procedures, facts and tools to describe,
explaining and predicting life phenomena. Mathematical literacy helps people to identify
and understand the role of mathematics in the world, and to make judgments and decisions
that have the right reasons in life
