7-8: They are souls of dead slaves. They feel no pain and are controlled by other people. They can possess
their victims if the victim is weak.

5-6: They are the souls of dead slaves. Other people use voodoo to control them and they can hurt their
victims.

possess her. Now that she knows what it is, she will be prepared for an attack.

B. Suspense:

7-8 There are several instances in the story where the bakroe appears in the distance. This builds up the
atmosphere because we know something will happen soon with it, like when she saw it outside and became
nauseous.

C. Surprise:

starting to haunt her. Later on in the story, the bakroe makes all the lights go out the first time she sees it.
