RESEARCH DESIGN : QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH DESIGN

A. Definition
Quasi-experimental research design is aimed to prove cause and effect relationship
between variables. It is almost same with true-experimental design but there are some
differences :
 The subjects of true experimental design are randomly assigned to treatment group
whereas the subjects of quasi-experimental design are not randomly assigned to
treatment groups.
 In true experimental design the researchers usually design the treatment whereas in
quasi-experimental design the researchers often does not have control over
treatment, but instead studies pre-existing groups that received different treatments
after the fact.
 True experimental design requires the use of control and treatment groups whereas
quasi-experimental design does not require control groups.

B. Types
There are three types of quasi-experimental designs :
1. Nonequivalent groups design
In nonequivalent group design, the researchers choose existing groups that
appear similar, but only one of the groups experiences the treatment. The researchers
try to explain any puzzling variables by organizing for them in their analysis or by
choosing the same group.
2. Regression discontinuity
Regression discontinuity design is used to evaluate programs that have a
terminal point of determining who qualify to participate. This enables researchers to
compare those just above and below the termination point to identify the effect the
program will have on the results.
3. Natural experiments
In natural experiments an external situation produced the random duty to care
groups. While some researchers use random tasks, natural experiments are not
viewed as proper experiments because of observations made in nature. Although
researchers do not have control of independent variables, they can exploit this event
after the fact to study the effects of treatment.
