INTRODUCTION

The incident of water pollution on Kim Kim River located in Pasir Gudang had affected more
than 5000 people in 2019. A case study written by Sharifah Norkhadijah Syed Ismail had highlighted the
chemicals found in that location, sources, and the action taken by the authorities.

TYPES OF CHEMICALS

Based on this review, they are 7 chemicals were found and highlighted on this incident. They are:

1. Methane – Colorless and odorless gas that dissolve in water


2. Hydrogen chloride – Colorless to yellow gas that corrosive and has strong irritating odor
3. Methyl mercaptan – Heavier than air
4. Acrylonitrile – Colorless liquid that dissolve in water and evaporates quickly
5. Acrolein – Colorless liquid with disagreeable odor
6. Benzene – colorless liquid
7. Xylene – sweet-smelling liquid

SOURCES

1. Human activities such as rice production, food processing, and fertilizers process
2. Production of pesticides
3. Found in soil, water, or air
4. Emission from wetlands and ocean

ACTION

1. The National for Occupational Health’s (NIOSH) limit the usage of methane to 1000 ppm for 8
hours and 5 ppm for hydrogen chloride
2. NIOSH limit for methyl mercaptan is 0.5 ppm and for OSHA is 10 ppm
3. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) limit 2 ppm for 8 hours’ workday for
acrylonitrile
4. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that acrolein used in food starch not more
than 0.6%
5. EPA limit benzene level in drinking water at 5 ppb and 10 ppm for xylene
