When students are told to write a narrative with a title, they should try to think out of the box

and not take only

the literal meaning of the word into consideration.

The following narrative illustrates this idea clearly:

The Tunnel
I was at the start of a tunnel and the faint light that I saw at the end was my great future. The tunnel was a long
one and hard work would definitely take me there. But there is always a short cut. This shortcut is the path of
crime! I would be teleported to the end of the tunnel in a jiffy and I would be a millionaire. Like an ignorant fool,
I walked into the tunnel with my head held high but I never knew that I would be caught in a labyrinth so
bewildering that even God would be in a map.

I was the newest member of the Indian cricket team. My lethal leg spin caught many stalwarts of the game, off
guard. This was only the dawn of my career but it only got murkier from here. Salim Kham called me a day before
our match against a neighbouring county. He offered me a million dollars to bold slow, short-length balls so that
their openers could do the trick and win the match.

reach in time, be ready for a bullet

I started dreaming about that million and what I would do with the million dollars. But then I thought, what if I
get caught? What if this is a sting operation. And most importantly what answer will I give to my county? But the
most important question which was instrumental in my refusing the money was, will I be able to look at myself
in the mirror after today?

I went to the board president for help. I had full faith in him and I thought he would give me the best solution.

care to hear anymore and just walked off and slammed the door on his face.

It was 11am. Time was running out. I went to my childhood coach all shattered and he showed me the way to
get out of this tunnel, which was leading nowhere. We managed to pool in some money and he told me to fly to
London and give out this news in a media expose. I followed his instructions not because I wanted glory, but to
tell the budding cricketers of the world, how bad this game could be and advise them to stay away from such
traps.

Salim Khan went to prison for eight years. The Board president was defamed in public and stripped of his post.
As for me, I had won hands down and managed to stay out of the trap. However, the mafia has made me their
target and fear stalks me at every step.

Will I ever see the light at the end of this tunnel?
