Gn September 21, 1892, the mail boat Butuan arrived with colored pennants
fying in the sea breeze. People thought that there was a Spanish dignitary coming so
people gathered and Captain Camjcero brought his brass band.
Tt turned out that it was an announcement that the lottery ticket no. 9736 jointly
owned by Captain Carnicero, Jose Rizal, and Francisco Equillor (Spanish resident of
Dipolog, a neighboring town of Dapitan), won a second prize of 20,000 in the
government owned lottery. Rizal was a lottery enthusiast. 7
Jose Rizal's share of the winning ticket was P6, 200. Upon receiving the sum, he
sent the 2,000 to his father and 200 to his friend Basa in Hong Kong, the rest he invested
to agricultural lands along the coast of Talisay.”
The Catholic Faith of Jose Rizal while in Dapitan
In his exile in Dapitan, the Jesuit Parish Priest, Father Pastels, would like to
change the perception and judgment of Jose Rizal about the priests. Fr. Pastells gave him
a book by Sarda with an advice that he stop his foolishness in viewing religion from the
prism of individual judgment and self-esteem. Jose Rizal had a tendency of using his
judgment based on his experiences and orientation in Europe, his bitterness over his
family and his persecution in the hands of the bad friars. The good parish priest tried to.
win over his side by having healthy and educated debates on catholic issues but his effort

Andres Bonifacio, the founder, ordered @ Ito go to Dapitan to seek
the advice of Rizal tegarding the armed uprising and their Plan of helping him escape
fom Dapitan. To camouflage the mission, Dr. Pio Valenzuela brought with him a blind
man named Edmundo Mata to solicit Rizal’s expert medical advice?* When they arrived
in Dapitan, Rizal welcomed them. But learning about the plan on the bloody Tevolution,
Rizal opposed for two reasons:
1.The people are not teady for a revolution;
2.Arms and funds must first be collected before raising the revolution,
He also objected on the plan to rescue him from exile because he had given his word to
the Spanish authorities!?
