My Philosophy of Justice

Justice Monologue #1

When God created the world he created Man and Woman in his image, to live in the world, be his
beloved children and live by his definition of good and evil. This means that all people are created in
the image of God and have the right to be treated with love, respect, dignity and fairness. However, this
doesn't happen because humans are constantly redefining good and evil to their own advantage at the
cost of those around them. It happens in families, then communities, then whole civilizations. This
causes an entire system to be built on injustice principles, as Bryan Stevenson says in True
Justice,“Whenever society begins to create policies and laws rooted in fear and anger, there will be
abuse and injustice.”

It is unjust to have our society built this way but what is justice in this instance?

Stevenson says “We all have a responsibility to create a just society.” but how?

When I was searching for the answer I wanted to know what God says about it, and I looked at the
word justice in the bible, and found it came from the Hebrew word “Mispat” which refers to
restorative justice, but more deeply, it means to take a step further and seek out those who are being
taken advantage of and help them. Not just charity but advocating and making change that stops the
injustices. Which is exactly what God says to do in Jeremiah 22:3 it says: “This is what the Lord says:
Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor, the one who has been robbed. Do
no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in
this place.” and in Proverbs 31:8-9 it says “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the
rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy”.
And God also says in the second of his two greatest commandments “Love your neighbor as yourself”

True justice is speaking up compassionately with love for those subject to injustice. As the Dali Lama
says “What is required in the face of injustice is strong compassion!” So let us be compassionate and
loving, let speak up for each other, and make real change.

We need to listen to the cries of Black Lives matter and stand against racial injustice. We need to hear
the complaints of those without good health care and advocate for them. Listening to Native
Americans about the increasing kidnappings of them.

Another thing Stevenson said was:“Somebody has to stand when other people are sitting. Somebody
has to speak when other people are quiet.” This I believe is true justice.

Robert but to words my thoughts when he said that room for growth needs to actually be a set

structure in our criminal justice system. Jazzy really aligned with my own philosophy and inspired me

to be more intentional about justice and compassion starting with human to human interaction.
