ASSIGNMENT – 2

1) If the signal loss is 76 dB, what is the received signal power in terms of dBW and dBm? (1 mark)
 Pt = 10 Log10 (400 W) = 26.02 dBW
Pr = Pt / Signal Loss
= 26.02 dBW/ 76 dB = 0.34 W
Received Signal Power Pr in dBW = 10 Log10 (0.34 W) = -4.68 dBW
Converting W to mW (MilliWatt) = 0.34 * 1000 = 340 mW
Received Signal Power Pr in dBM = 10 Log10 (340 mW) = 25.31 dBM

2) If noise power 𝑃N = 2×10^-3 mW (milliwatt), please calculate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in

decibel on the receiver side. (1mark)
 PS= 400 W, PN = 2 X10^-3 mW = 0.002 mW = 0.002 x 10^-3 W = 0.000002 W
SNR = 10 Log10 (PS/PN)
= 10 Log10(400 / 0.000002)
= 10 Log10(200000000)
= 83.01 dB

3) If channel bandwidth is 30 MHz, what is channel capacity according to Shannon formula?

(1mark)
 Capacity C = B Log2(1 + PS/ PN)
= 30 X Log2 (1 + 400 / 0.000002)
= 30 X Log2 ( 1 + 200000000)
= 30 X Log2 ( 200000001)
= 827.26 Mb/s

4) If this signal is an electromagnetic wave, suffering the 76 dB signal loss, how far has the wave
traveled if its frequency is 300 MHz? Assuming both the transmitting and receiving antenna
gains are equal to 1, speed of light is 3×108 m/s, and it is free space loss. (2 marks)
 SIGNAL LOSS = 76dB, f = 300 MHz , Pt = 400 W, Pr = 0.34 W ,Gt = 1, Gr = 1, C = 3 X 10^8 m/s
Lamda = C / f = 3 X 10^8 / 300 = 10^6

Pr = Pt x Gt x Gr x (Lamda / 4xPieXd)^2

0.34 = 400x1x1x( 10^6 / 4x3.14xd)^2

0.34 = 400x (10^12 / 16 x 3.14 x 3.14 x d^2)

d^2 = 400 x 10^12 / 0.34 x 16 x 3.14 x 3.14

d^2 = 74576465338.05
d = 273086.91 m
