What is Apartheid?
Apartheid was the legalised racial segregation that
began during the 1940’s. It allowed for better rights
for white people, whilst black people suffered.
Millions of black people were removed from their
homes to be sent to separate towns to live with
people of their own colour. They were not only
racially discriminated but also suffered through
means such as pay rate, job availability and how
they were socially treated.
What Caused Apartheid?
Apartheid was caused by a number of factors;
- World War II and The Great Depression led to
increasing economic issues in South Africa, which
caused the government to increase their policies
on Racial Segregation
- Fear. Because White people were in the minority,
they were scared that they would lose their culture,
language, jobs to the majority.
What sort of impact did Apartheid have on the world?
Apartheid started many reactions around the world. All over the United
States and Britain, people were rallying and protesting against the unfair
conditions that were occurring in Southern Africa.
Bantu Self-Government Act
In 1958, Hendrik Verwoerd, the
prime minister at the time, began
to refine the apartheid policy into
something that was called
‘seperate development’. This was
where Black People were sent to
separate areas, known as
Bantustans. There were 10 of these
in the whole country, into which 3.5
million people were sent to. The
system was made to seem as if
every Black South African had their
own rights, but in reality they were
cut off from the nations political
body
