Technical Guidance Notes

A Quantity of Hot Taps A separate sheet should be completed for each hot tap unless all the details are the same.
1
B Line Details
1 Parent pipe diameter Used to determine fitting size. Diameter in mm is preferred, however if pipe nominal size is give, please state NB.
2 Wall thickness Used for reinforcement calculations for Nozzles, or for circumferential weld prep size for full encirclement fittings.
3 Material / Grade Used to check material compatibility and essential for calculating reinforcement of nozzles.
Seamed, seamless or A coupon support may be required when hot tapping spiral wound pipe. Seamed pipes may need proud welds
4
spiral wound grinding down.
5 Contents To ensure compatibility with fitting material and seals.
If Sour Service advise
6 As B5. Details regarding the concentration of H2S in parts per million is essential.
H2S ppm
7 Design pressure The theoretical maximum pressure and temperature the parent pipe may attain. This information should be
8 Design temperature available in the piping specification. The fitting will be designed to the same parameters.

10 Orientation of Pipework Eg. Horizontal, Vertical. Used to determine correct field weld preps.
Horizontal or vertical. Or, if angled, is the tapping perpendicular to the line axis, or for example is the fitting branch
11 Orientation of Tapping
axis at 45 degrees to the line axis.
12 Is the line Piggable To determine what type of completion plug is required (if necessary), if Furmanite are asked to advise.
C Fitting Details
Full Encirclement - fully encloses line pipe, reinforcement calculations are based on the opening in the fitting run
tube.
Mechanical Fitting - requires no on site welding to the line. A bolted enclosure is used with an elastomeric seal,
1 Construction of Fitting often supported with resin if possible.
Fabricated Nozzle - does not fully encompass the line, reinforcement pads can be provided if required under the
calculation.
Weldolet’s - forged components that do not require additional reinforcement pads.
Hot Tap – for use with hot tap operation only.
Linestop – for use with linestop plugging head after hot tap operation. Closesure facility supplied as standard unless
a sacrificial valve is to be used.
2 Type of Fitting
3 Way – an offtake is provided off the side of the branch to provide the ability to use a bypass without the need for
an additional hot tap tee. If a 3-Way tee is required, please provide the offtake nominal size and the wall thickness
of the attaching butt welded pipe.
3 Branch Size The nominal size of the branch connection.
Flange Facing The required face of the flange on the branch connection.
4 Flange Rating The class rating of the flange required on the branch connection.
Is a Closesure / Stopping
5 This is a facility in the flange to allow a completion plug, guide bar plug, or scarfed completion plug to be installed.
off Facility required?
Standard Completion Plug – plug located in the flange to seal off the branch connection and allow a blind flange to
be attached onto the flange. Care must be taken if re-entry into the branch is required as seals may have
deteriorated over time.
Scarfed Plug – a completion plug which includes a section of tube on the bottom, scarfed to suit the line pipe. The
6 Type of Plug coupon that is removed during the hot tap operation can then be welded to the scarfed tube to allow PIG’s to pass
by effectively.
Flow Through Guide Bar Plug – a plug which allows the flow of product through the branch, whilst providing guide
bars located over the branch opening to help guide PIG’s down the line. Flow through plugs with extended guide
bars are used on all 3-way tees that are PIGable, to allow the product to flow through the bypass.

D Design / Manufacturing Details

The code in which the fitting is to be designed to. This should be the same as the design code for the pipeline to
which it is to be fitted.
Design/Manufacturing ASME B31.3 – Process Piping
1
Code ASME B31.4 – Transportation Pipelines for Liquid Hydrocarbons & other Liquids
ASME B31.8 – Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems
T/SP/F/4 – Gas Industry Stndard for Hot Tap & Stopping off Connections
2 Design Factor This usually only applies to design codes B31.4&8, ASME B31.3 code does not use an additional design factor.
Is a corrosion allowance
3 Customer to advise, if yes, please provide value.
required?
Is a Factory Hydrostatic
4 If required, the fitting can be pressure tested in accordance with the design code prior to being sent to site.
Pressure Test Required?
Should materials comply If the line contents are sour, suitable material will need to be chosen. It is important B6 is answered, further
with hardness information may be requested. In many cases it may be suitable to only supply materials that meet the hardness
5
requirements of NACE requirements under NACE MR0175. If any further material requirements are needed please specify under the
MR0175? special requirements section in E3.
Is stress relieving In certain circumstances fittings may undergo post weld heat treatment to comply with the design code or for
6
required? fabrication issues. If stress relieving is mandatory this can be done, however there will be cost implications.
E General Details
1 Gasket Type Furmanite standard is non-asbestos compressed fibre. Please advise if alternative is required.
2 Stud / Nut Type Furmanite standard is SA-193 B7 studs, & SA-194 2H nuts. Please advise if alternative is required.
Please advise any special requirements, not covered under this data sheet. ie. Sub sea application, HIC tested
3 Special Requirements
materials, third party verification, conformity with PED. etc.
