The Audiolingual Approach To Language Teaching
The Audiolingual Approach To Language Teaching
The audio-lingual method, Army Method, or New Key, is a style of teaching used in
teaching foreign languages. It is based on the idea of Coleman Report that it was
impractical to teach oral skills and that reading should become the focus. The ALM was
first known as the Army Method. For a number of reasons, the ALM enjoyed many
years of popularity, and even now, adaptations of the ALM are found in contemporary
methodologies.
There is the principle of the ALM (Lingual Audio) Method by submitting "four
slogans"
- Language is speech, not writing,
- Language is a set of habits, which means that the behavior will repeat and more.
Therefore, language must be done by repetition or repetition.
- Teaching languages, not words, language learning activities rather than language
translations.
- Language is what native speakers say.
The techniques derived from the principles of the Audio-Lingual method are as follows:
1. Students listen to a native-like model such as the teacher of a tape-recorder.
2. Students repeat the new material chorally and individually.
3. Teachers correct students’ errors immediately and directly.
4. Dialogues are memorized by reversing roles between (teacher-student) (student-
student).
5. Students are encouraged to change certain key words or phrases in the dialogue.
6. Students write short guided compositions on given topics.
7. Students are encouraged to induce grammatical rules.
8. Students are involved in language games and role-play.
CONCLUSION
Audio Lingual Method is one of technique for alternative solutions that the teacher can
use to enrich student’s vocabulary. It also aims to develop communicative competence
of students using dialogues and drills. The use of dialogues and drills are effective in
foreign language teaching as they lead the students to produce speech. Repetition of the
dialogues and the drills will enable students to respond quickly and accurately in spoken
language.
