I. Problem Solving
1. A three – phase, 3 – wire transmission line has an impedance per wire of 8 +24i ohms.
The receiving end is composed of 3 – phase induction motor drawing 3,600 kilowatt at
0.80 lagging and a resistive load drawing 132 A. If the receiving end voltage is 13.8
kilovolt, calculate:
a.) Sending end voltage
b.) Percent regulation
c.) Line efficiency
2. A 60 Hz, 3 – phase long type transmission line is 175 miles long. It has a total series
impedance of 35 + j140 and shunt admittance of j930 microsiemens. It delivers 40 MW at
220 kV, with 90 % power factor lagging. Determine the sending end voltage.
3. A 3 – phase, 4 wire system supplies loads which are unequally distributed in the three
phase lines. An analysis of the circuit shows that the positive and the negative sequence
components of the current in line A are as follows: Ia1 = 48.02cis (-87.6o) A; Ia2 =
163.21cis40.45oA; In = 156.6cis112.7o A. Determine the line current at line A.
4. A 60 Hz turbo generator is rated 500 MVA, 22 kV. It is wye connected and solidly
grounded and is operating at rated voltage at no load. It is disconnected from the rest of
the system. Its reactances are X1 = X2 = 0.15 and X0 = 0.05 per unit. Find the ratio of the
subtransient current for a symmetrical three – phase fault.
