Exercise 1
Determine the concrete cover using AS3600 for one-way slabs and beams considering fire and
durability criteria. Assume 90 min. fire rating.
SOLUTION:
Cover for A2 exposure = 20mm for 40MPa concrete (Table 4.10.3.2, AS3600-2018)
Cover for fire resistance of continuous slabs = as = 15mm + 15mm (for PT strands) = 30mm (Table
5.5.2(B), AS3600-2018)
Cover for fire resistance of continuous beams = as = 25mm + 15mm (for PT strands) = 40mm (Table
5.4.1(B), AS3600-2018)
clear cover 15mm as
Minimum cover = Using 25mm (clear cover to satisfy durability and fire)
Exercise 2
Using AS3600 – Section 6.10, determine the design bending moments between grid C and D on level
2 of the 160/175mm thick one way slab. Calculate the moment at mid span and beam support locations
for each grid. (Consider a 1metre strip width).
SOLUTION:
𝑭𝑭𝒅𝒅 (Grid 1-2, 3-4) = 1.2G + 1.5Q = 1.2 × 5.125 + 1.5 × 1.5 = 8.4 kPa

Using AS3600 – Section 6.10, determine the design bending moments for the level 2, 325mm deep
concrete beam on grid 3 at mid span and column support locations between grids A and C.
SOLUTION:
Self-weight (Grid B-C) = 9.2 × (0.16 + 0.175)/2 × 25 + (0.325 − 0.168) × 2 × 25 = 46.4 kN/m
G (Grid A-B) = Wsw + WSIDL + Wblocks = 41.4 + (8 × 1.125) + 13.2 = 63.6 kN/m
