SPEAKING PART 2 – A SONG – CHANGE OPINION – OLD FRIEND

Describe a line that you remember from a poem or song

What is it?
What poem is it from?
How did you know about it?
How do you feel about it?
How did you know
• I first heard the song on the radio (or Tiktok, Spotify, etc.)
• It was the song every one dancing to on Tiktok
• It went viral on Tiktok within a few days
• It is used as background music for pretty much everything and anything
• And now it is on my Spotify playlist
How you feel about it
• This song/ those lines – give me (summer, happy, vacation) vibes
• It is literally impossible not to start dancing to the song when hearing it
• It’s my absolute go-to single when it comes to karaoke because it doesn’t matter how badly out
of tune I sing; everyone will join in and cover up my hideous singing.
• I think this song should be on top of the list of catchiest songs of all time
• It is one of those songs that you can’t help but hum along with
• One of the most persistent earworms
• It’s impossible to get the song out of your head, if you hear it even once

Describe a time when you changed your opinion

What the original opinion was
Why you changed it
When it was
How felt about it
What the original opinion was and what opinion you have
• I used to think that parents/ couples mustn’t get divorced if they have children as those kids will
suffer from their separation, even if they are terribly unhappy in their marriage. Now, I think kids
will suffer even more living in a family where conflicts are the norm.
• I used to love living in foreign European countries, where the living standard is much higher than
it is in Vietnam and even decided to studying and living abroad after graduating from my
university. Now, I think I will live in Vietnam, especially after the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic

DESCRIBE A LINE THAT YOU REMEMBER FROM A POEM OR SONG

WHAT IS IT?
WHAT POEM IS IT FROM?
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT IT?
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT?

Well, I don’t know if you’ve heard of that song, but it’s kinda popular - that song is let her go
- performed by a group called passenger - if my memory serves.
And my favourite lines go like - only know I’ve been high when you’re feeling low, only hate
the road when you’re missing home - only know you love her when you let her go.
I honestly couldn’t recall the first time that I listened to it as it’s very popular and always
sounds familiar to me. But, a few weeks ago, when I turned on an automatically-created
list of songs on youtube, I noticed that song was in heavy rotation and really catchy, too.
So, I turned on Shazam to identify the song, added it to my favourite playlist, played it over
and over. And those lines, honestly, are some of the most persistent earworms. The next
day, I caught myself humming its tune. Once it has buried itself in your brain, it’s probably
going to take some kind of surgery to get it removed once and for all.
Well, talking a bit about the meaning.
It’s kinda easy to see what the meanings of those lines are, and it’s the thing, which is a
universal truth. Every single time that I listen to this masterpiece, I always tell myself how
precisely the song explains what happens in our lives. We, humans, always take things for
granted. When we have them, we have a tendency not to value them the way we should;
and when they’re all gone, we sit in despair, realizing how much they meant to us. The only
thing left is the feeling of regret, the worst feeling one could possibly have.. - “only know
you’ve been high when you’re feeling low” - you have to feel low, down and depressed to
realize you’ve been high.
And those probably are all I want to tell you about today.

Well, believe it or not, I used to be an opponent of regular medical checkups, always rolling
my eyes at those who said they monthly had regular health screenings. I adhered to the
belief that it was a waste of time and money, going around, telling my friends that they should
stop acting like those old people, and always think they’re sick.
But several days ago, I dropped my opposition after learning that one of my friend’s
relatives was diagnosed with terminal cancer, as this person only went to the hospital when
he got specific symptoms of the diseases, which, I just learned and for your information as
well, take place at the late stages of the disease when treatment options are limited and
of course, chances of survival are low when it comes to serious diseases.
I went online, read a lot of articles about similar stories and even stories about early detection
and successful treatment as a result thanks to having health check-ups regularly
It doesn’t take a lot of time to go to the hospital to get blood tests done and know how well
some organs like kidneys, liver and heart are working. With the increasing affordability of
some high-tech medical devices, it no longer costs a fortune to have an ultrasound scan of
my liver or other organs to keep track of my health and prevent lots of health problems; and
it’s common knowledge now that many deadly diseases lack symptoms until advanced.

HOW YOU FELT ABOUT IT
It’s been a while since the last time that I visited my primary school. Last week, as I came back
to visit my hometown, I was driving through that school in which I had lots of good memories.
And, I don’t know why, but I immediately thought about X, a childhood friend of mine.
She was also my next-door neighbor, so we used to spend lots of time, mostly playing some
traditional folk games. And It was always fun. But then, her family decided to move to another
neighborhood and we also entered different universities. So, we’re no longer neighbors or
schoolmates and have lost touch ever since.
And coincidentally, that afternoon, when surfing Facebook, her name, out of the blue,
appeared on the list of suggested friends. And without the second thought, I decided to
send her a friend request
Honestly, I found it strange and bizarre reaching out to her after so long. But, I did eventually
and fortunately, she accepted that request and I started to ask if she’s free for some catch-
up at a cafe. She seemed to be interested in reconnecting, too, so, that was a yes.
We met at a cafe. Of course, at first, I was worried that our friendship couldn’t stand the test
of time and wouldn’t be what it once was. But, no, things went kind of smoothly. I explained
why I fell out of touch; it wasn’t anything in particular. Then, we spent like an hour reminiscing
about the past, the good old times when we had nothing to worry about or had no
responsibility to shoulder like us at the present. This also reminds me of how persuasive she
was, when I was down in the dumps ‘cause I got kind of a poor score for my mid-term
examination. In some magical ways that I cannot remember, she really did manage to cheer
me up. And we promised to keep in touch and there will be the next meetup.
That’s probably all I want to tell you about today
