Reflection

Reflection: this project for geology is about Big cottonwood canyon located in the

Wasatch front. It goes over minerals i found during my trip into the canyon. Big cottonwood

canyon is filled with many hiking trails and activities one can do. Along with fun activities, it has

a beautiful scenery that is filled with history of how it was formed. The canyons elevation is

4,734 feet above sea level, and dates back to about 800 million to 1 billion years back. “The

upper canyon is a wide glacier- carved valley with numerous side drainage leading to lakes and

alpine cirques” (hiking the Wasatch, John Veranth). Not only did the Wasatch Mountains go

through glaciation but also faulting and some volcanic activity. In the Mesozoic time, there was

compressional tension that made the Wasatch Mountains by thrust fault which contained pre

Cambrian metamorphic rocks and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks.

reflection: – 1) What problems did you encounter with the project and how could you have addressed
those problems? 2) How does the content you learned in this assignment relate to what you have
learned in other classes? 3) Describe how you went about finding the geology in the field and what you
learned about how you might change this in the future?

The problems we encountered as a group was having the time to meet up together. We all had
a different schedule so we decided to split up and go separately. We sent each other our
information and observations we found on our trip. Everyone was able to contribute
something. Another problem was forgetting the minerals I saw and observed on my trip that I
learned classifying in class. I could have taken a guide with me to remember. Luckily, I did take
some rocks in order to identify them later in the process of my project. This project related a lot
to our class assignments but, not as much to other classes I have had. The only similarities I can
think of is weather in forensics which we went over. Weathering can affect anything that is in
its path. Without weathering, big cottonwood canyon would not be what it is today.
