INTRODUCTION Ms. Akshaya Homes, # 22, 2™ Street, Nehru Nagar, Adyar, Chennai, has proposed to construct a Commercial & Residential complex at Coimbatore. It is reported that the proposed building is a framed structure with Stilt4 floors and Stilt+10 floors in ultimate stage. The loading details for various columns have not been furnished. Scaled lay out showing the dispositions of the site, proposed building etc, have not been furnished. 2. TERMS OF REFERENCE The given job comprises of “Drilling in soil to a depth of 10.00m-OR upto ‘the hard stratum with SPT “N” value over 50 whichever is encountered earlier — Conducting necessary field test (S.P.T) & Laboratory test on the:soil - Submitting three copies of soil test report with Safe Bearing Capacity of soil, Classification of Soil, type & depth of foundation, recommendations for the proposed structure.” The bore holes were terminated, only after confirming the continuity of hard stratum with three to four consecutive ‘N’ value over 50, where SPT febound and also 3.00m into the hard layer. 3. FIELD WORKS ‘The task of soil investigation and suggestion of suitable foundation was entrusted to this firm. The exploration works were commenced and completed 1 Job No: S.E. 2144 eso 9 eeu CER HeuEeREeHRUCHCOKCEKCHECHECCCCeCeHCKCCEHS P NEO GEOCONS during November 2006. Totally three bore holes have been provided upto and within the hard stratum upto 4.50m depth each at the locations shown by the client as per the terms of reference. The bore holes were advanced using rotary boring with calyx drill rig by employing direct drill mud circulation process. The drill mud was prepared using sodium bentonite. As part of boring programme, SPT were conducted at regular intervals by suspending the drilling operations and by inserting the SPT assembly at the lower end of the string of hollow drill rods. Before, conducting the SPT, the bore hole at a particular test depth was cleaned by allowing water under pressure till such time the upcoming wash water was free from any soil particles in suspension. Normally about 10 minutes were found sufficient to clean the bore hole at a particular test depth. The observed SPT ‘N’ values are tabulated in bore log figs — 2 to 4. Disturbed soil samples were also collected, wherever necessary and brought to the soils laboratory located in Chennai — 600 005. In all the bore holes, the ground water table was not encountered within the explored depth of 4.50m below the existing ground level at the time of exploration 4, LABORATORY TESTS Soil samples collected from the bore holes were subjected to the following laboratory tests as per the relevant Indian Standards. 1. Grain size analysis a) Sieve analysis b) Hydrometer analysis Sieve analysis were conducted for the cohesion less soil layers and combined sieve and hydrometer tests were conducted for cohesive soil layers. The test results are given in table — 1. 2 Job No: S.E. 2144 ~ SV SSO eeeeeeeeoeee dee eee ere deere eceeee NEO GEOCONS 5. SOIL PROFILES Based on the SPT data, necessary Soil profiles were constructed and the same are presented in the bore log figs — 2 to 4 In bore hole — 1,the top layer present upto 0.50m depth is silty sand with gravel, followed by medium dense silty sand with gravel with the observed SPT ‘N’ value 19, followed by 2.70m thick very dense Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) ‘comprising of silt & sand with rock pieces with the observed SPT ‘N’ value more than 50 at three consecutive depths, followed by 0.50m thick very dense weathered rock upto the explored depth of 4.50m below the existing ground level with the observed SPT more than 50 and the split spoon sampler attached at the lower end of the SPT assembly got rebound which is an indicator that the substratum is very dense in compactness. It is likely that similar or still stronger substratum is to be continued in the further down depths also, Top layer present upto 0.50m depth in bore hole — 2 is silty sand with gravel, followed by 1.00m thick medium dense silty sand with gravel with the observed SPT 'N’ value 1§ followed by 2.50m thick very dense Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) comprising of silt & sand with rock pieces with the observed SPT ‘N’ value more than 50 at four consecutive depths, followed by 0.50m thick very dense weathered rock upto the explored depth of 4.50m below the existing ground level with the observed SPT more than 50 and the split spoon sampler attached at the lower end of the SPT assembly got rebound which is an indicator that the substratum is very dense in compactness. The loading details in various columns have not been furnished. For the above stated proposed structure Individual footing / Strip raft foundation shall be provided at a depth around 2.00m below the existing ground level on Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) layer with the observed SPT ‘N’ value more than 50. The Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) layer comprising of silt, gravel particles, 6.2. Allowable bearing pressure from settlement criterion Settlement of a footing of width B, under unit intensity of pressure, resting on dry cohesion less soil deposit with known standard penetration resistance ‘N’ value could be computed from fig — 9 of IS: 8009 (Part - 1). The allowable bearing pressure is calculated for a settlement of 25mm for a foundation of maximum width of 2.50m placed at 2.00m depth below the existing ground level on Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) layer. Ground water level is taken at the base of the foundation as worst case. The allowable bearing pressure works ‘out to 25t/m?. COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX FOR STILT + 10 FLOORS 6.3. Allowable bearing pressure for Full raft foundation For higher loading rate and also, if the footing covers (Eighty Percent) 80% of the plan area, full raft foundation shall be provided on Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) layer at any depth below 2.00m from the existing ground level with an ailowable bearing pressure of 25t/m’. The settlement for full raft would be within the allowable limit, since the underlying layer is very dense Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) layer. The Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) layer comprises of silt & sand particles with gravel. Hence the allowable bearing pressure should not exceed 25t/m*, inorder to avoid crushing of soil particles under sustained loading, 7. RECOMMENDATIONS 4. For the proposed framed structure with Stilt+4 floors, Isolated spread footing / strip raft shall be provided as foundation. 2. The bottom of footing shall be located at a depth of 2.00m below the existing ground level on Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) layer. 3. For the proposed framed structure with Stilt¥10 floors, Full raft (Mat) foundation shall be provided at any depth below 2.00m from the existing ground level. 4. For Individual footing / Strip raft / Full Raft foundation, the allowable bearing pressure works out to 25t/m?. 5. The Soft Disintegrated Rock (SDR) layer comprises of silt & sand particles with gravel. Hence the allowable bearing pressure should not 7 Job No: S.E. 2144 | pe ale NEO GEOCONS exceed 25t/m*, inorder to avoid crushing of soil particles under sustained loading. 6. For the above loading rate, the settlement is within the allowable limit. 7. All the columns shall be tied up at the grade beam level both longitudinally and transversally to ensure integral action of the frame as a whole. 8. Over excavations shall be avoided. Over excavated portion, if any, shall be backfilled with lean concrete. 9. After reaching the termination level of the trench, the laying of mud mat concrete shall be done immediately without allowing any elapse of time. This is to avoid collection at rain / storm water in the trench and causing reduction in strength of the supporting stratum. Alternatively, the last 0.15m thick portion of foundation shall be removed just before mud mat conoreting. 10.The entire recommendations as above are based on three bore holes provided upto and within the hard stratum at the locations shown by the departmental officers as per the terms of reference. The uniformity or otherwise of the soil delineation and strength profile over the entire site shall be verified during execution. If there are any variations, the same shall be reported to us for review and further advice.
