OPENING
Invite 3-4 students over for small group time. Give each students a piece of paper and crayons.
Ask them to write their names on the paper. Help any student who needs help writing their name
and date their papers. Show students a written number 5. Ask them how else they could show 5.
Allow a discussion. If no one seems to catch on then ask what if we drew 5 of something? Do
you think that could mean 5 too?
BODY
1. Ask students to draw 5 of anything they like.
2. If struggling give ideas like circles, hearts, pumpkins, turkeys, cars, people, etc.
3. Once everyone is done allow them to present their drawing to their classmates at the
small group table.
4. Have each child count their 5 items they drew to prove there is 5 of them.

CLOSURE
Ask if anyone would like to draw 5 more of something different. Repeat presenting them if they
choose to draw more.

ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:
- Do 5 different colored scribble marks if students are struggling with making a definitive
shape.

ASSESSMENT:
Collect papers for portfolios.

SELF-ASSESSMENT/REFLECTION:
While most of these pictures ended up being scribble marks, I was okay with it because they
understood that they had to make 5 of them. For the most part students were able to make 5 of
something. The few that struggled I just did a hand over hand and we counted out 5. Then noted
on their paper that we did it together.
