Industrial and Mechatronics Engineering ME 204 Thermofluids Assignment 1 Due date 13 June 2021
1. Answer all questions
2. Steam tables will be provided. Question 1. A) Give any example of 5 temperature and 5 pressure measuring instruments and explain their appropriateness [5] B) Calculate the pressure, density of air and temperature of at Inyangani Mountain which is 1000m above sea level. [5] 0 C) Water at 20 C flows through a steel pipe 0.12m diameter for a distance of a distance of 600m The pressure drops to 250kPa in that distance while the elevation increases to 8m. Determine the frictional loss factor given that the velocity of water is 1.31m/s. D) Oil is drawn from from a tank which is 200 m above the ground level. The outlet of the pipe is fitted with a nozzle to produce a high speed jet . The velocity at the is 55m/s . Calculate the (a) power of the Jet , (b) the power supplied by the reservoir and (c) the head used to overcome losses [15] Question 2 A) With the aid of mathematical equation state the 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics [2] B) Plot the following processes on a PV diagrams: I) Super heated steam is cooled at constant pressure until liquid just begins to form. [3] II) A liquid vapor mixture with quality of 60% is heated at constant volume until its quality is 100% [3] C) Write Bernoulli’s equation and all the different forms of energy in this equation [3] D) A fixed mass of ideal gas contained in a closed system is initially at a pressure of 100 kN m-2, a temperature of 15°C, and occupies a volume of 0.15 m3. The gas is then compressed to a volume of 0.06 m3 and a pressure of 300 kN m-2. The gas is then expanded at constant pressure unit it reoccupies its original volume. If the characteristic constant for the gas is 189 J kg-1 K-1, determine the mass of gas in the system and the temperature at the end of the compression and expansion processes. [6] e) In an ideal Rankine cycle steam leaves the boiler as saturated vapor at 30bars and is condensed to 0.1bars . (i) Sketch the Tvs S diagram of this process. (ii) State the major components of this Rankine cycle (iii) Calculate the heat generated in the boiler, the power of the pump, the quality of steam as it enters the condenser, the Rankine efficiency.
