Industrial and Mechatronics Engineering ME204 Thermofluids Test 1 28 June 2021 Question 1 a) Ammonia in a piston/cylinder arrangement is at 700kPa, 800C . It is then cooled at constant pressure just up to a saturated vapor. The cooling then continues at constant volume until the temperature is -100C and pressure is 290kPa. Show this process on PV and TV diagrams [5] b) Determine whether the water at each of the following states is saturated liquid, superheated vapor, saturated vapor or mixture of saturated liquid and vapor: i. 10MPa, 0.003m3/kg ii. 1MPa , 1900C iii. 2000C, 0.1m3/kg iv. 10kPa, 100C v. 1300C, 200kPa [5] c) A cylinder fitted with a frictionless piston contains carbon dioxide at 500 kPa, 400 K, at which point the volume is 50 L. The gas is now allowed to expand until the piston reaches a set of fixed stops at 150 L cylinder volume. This process is polytropic, with the polytropic exponent n equal to 1.20. Additional heat is now transferred to the gas, until the final temperature reaches 500 K. Determine i) The final pressure inside the cylinder. [3] ii) The work and heat transfer for the overall process. [3] d) A steam turbine power plant operating at supercritical pressure, as shown in FigQ1d below As a first approximation, it may be assumed that the turbine and the pump processes are reversible and adiabatic. Neglecting any changes in kinetic and potential energies, calculate i) The specific turbine work output [3] ii) The pump work input [3] iii) The thermal efficiency of the cycle [3]
