INTRODUCTION

Agility is defined as the ability of an individual to change direction in a rapid manner.

Agility is one of the physical fitness under behaviour -based fitness. According to Annarino
(1976), agility is defined as one of the elements in physio motor factors derived from the action
of nerves on the muscular system with the correct muscular reaction to produce the desired
movement. So, this condition must be done at the appropriate degree of accuracy and
application of force. Whereas according to Safrit (1973), Clarke (1976), Methewa (1978),
Baumgarther & Jackson (1999), agility is the ability to change body position and direction
rapidly. Johnson & Nelson (1986) also stated that agility is the physical ability of a person to
change body position and direction accurately and quickly.

The nature of agility not only involves speed but also includes the body’s ability to
make sudden changes of movement or direction (Hunsicker, 1974). Barrow and McGee (1979)
stated that the effectiveness of agility can be enhanced by a combination of aspects of strength,
muscular endurance, speed, kinaesthetic senses and coordination. Muscle strength and
endurance factors can increase speed, then indirectly those factors can affect the effectiveness
of agility. Good coordination factors can be related to the natural characteristics of a movement.
As a result, the coordination factor can further increase the effectiveness of the agility factor.
Other factors influencing agility include age, level of maturity, body size, body shape type,
nutrition and environment (Clarke, 1976).

In the sport of handball, agility is one of the most important components as it allows
the athlete to move and change body direction quickly. It can be seen when a handball athlete
performs a dribble change of direction in response to an unpredictable stimulus. Agility in
handball also plays an important role in terms of attacking the opponent as well as defending
the opponent. When agility skills are not done properly it can have such an effect can result in
injury. Usually, a handball team's agility training needs to be improved to ensure that the
athlete's performance improves. Therefore, agility is an important component in the sport of
handball.

OBJECTIVE

• Identify the definition of agility and the relationship between agility in handball
• Benefits that a handball players may gain from mastering agility drills.
• Capable to acknowledge the importance of agility drills in handball as well as
how to conduct it in an appropriate way
• Be able to identify the most effective agility drills and demonstrate it in the sport
of handball

• Make a throw towards the goal

3. Sideway

• Run forward and backward from the marker

• Maintain the same speed until exhausted
• Make a throw towards the goal

(Mini hurdle agility drills)

1. Sideway

• Starting with jumping the mini hurdle in a line

• By facing the body sideway, accelerate forward and backward until the end
• Place the stick further from each other to make it challenging

Single-leg hop

• Starting with jumping the mini hurdle in a line

• Jump forward with single leg from left to right
• Doing it by balancing the body to prevent injury

Double-leg hop

• Starting with jumping the mini hurdle in a line

• Jump forward with both legs from left to right

3
• Doing it by balancing the body to prevent injury

Defending Agility drills in Handball

(V cone agility drill)

1. Sprint

• Get ready in the middle cone to accelerate to the right cone and back to the middle cone
to create obstacles
• Next accelerate to the left cone to make an obstacle to the left cone and back to the
middle cone to make an obstacle
• Perform fast movement acceleration

2. Sprint and reverse back

• Ready in the middle cone sprint to the right cone and return with a state of retreat to the
middle cone and create an obstacle
• Then make a sprint to the left cone and return to the middle cone by reversing
• Perform fast movement acceleration

3. Sideway

• Get ready in the middle cone and start sideway to the right cone and back to the middle
cone with sideway style and make obstacles
• Next to do sideway to the left cone and back to the middle cone to make obstacles
• Perform fast movement acceleration

(Around the D agility drill)

• Before doing this exercise must warm up first

• Before training this exercise must be in the state of choice and started from the left cone

Goalkeeping Agility Drills in Handball

• Move forward with both feet in and out while each hand extend to the side along with
outside feet
• Perform with high speed of movement

SWOT ANALYSIS

1. Strength

• Fast paced in every drill with high speed of movements

• Players having a good level of cardiovascular strength in every drill
• Gains an overall control on every drill done and with high level of precision

2. Weakness

• Short Duration of video recording which reduces the overall information gained
• Environmental factor and device deficiency which affects the features and recording
session of the video
• Lack of face to face interaction due to the pandemic Covid-19 that evolved in 2020 till
now.

3. Opportunities

• Could develop more skills in order to enhance themselves as a well-known player or

maybe even as a coach in the future.
• Gain sponsor from local authorities to carry programs related to handball in order to
spread the skills of handball among youths
• Be a medium in sharing the knowledge or skills of handball to others by verbal, non-
verbal and visual communication in our daily life.

4. Threat

• Injuries could have occurred during the recording session due to uneven surface
• Players are also exposed to the Covid-19 virus which can be anywhere at all times.

7
CONCLUSION

From the above content, our team has a clearer understanding of the theme of handball

agility, which further strengthens us to be familiar with the concept of handball. In handball,

agility training is as important as physical fitness, strength, and endurance training. In handball

agility training, we must start from both technical and conceptual aspects. We learn different

ways of functional defence and offense agility training. We pass more Group communication,

discover, analyse, and solve problems together in the interaction. Through discussion, address

the respective problems of handball and integrate them into actual training. As handball is no

longer dominated by offense, it is offensive and defensive. To achieve a higher level of

handball development, handball must follow the law of modern handball development. In

today's world, a proactive form of defence has emerged, namely aggressive defence. We must

keep pace with the times, strengthen the discussion and research of the concept and theory of

offensive defence, concentrate on improving the quality of defence, and put the ability to

promote offensive defence in the most important position. To adapt to the development trend

of handball in the modern world, this will be an important condition for winning the

championship.
