More problem section 2.

1: A car slows down from 23m/s to rest in a distance of 85m. What was its acceleration?

2: A plane must reach a speed of 33m/s for takeoff. How long a runway is need if the constant
acceleration is 3m/s2 .

3: A world class sprinter can burst out of blocks to essentially top speed of about 11.5m/s in
the first 15m of the race. What is the average acceleration of this sprinter and how long does it
take the sprinter to reach that speed.

4: A car travelling at 85km/h hits the tree. The front end of the car compress and the driver
comes to rest after travelling 80 cm. What is the average acceleration during the collision?
Express your answer in terms of g.

5: A stone is dropped from the top of a cliff. It hits the ground below after 3.25s. How high is
the cliff?

6: If a car rolls gently off from a vertical cliff. How long will it take to reach 85km/hr?

7: Estimate how long will it take for King Kong to fall straight down from the top of empire
state building. Empire state building is not famous for its height of 380m. What will be his
velocity just before hitting the landing?

8: An object starts from rest and falls under the influence of gravity. Draw the graph of speed
and distance verse time.

10: Show algebraically that if you neglect air resistance a ball thrown vertically upward with a
speed v will have the same speed when it comes back down to the starting point.

11: A helicopter is ascending vertically with a speed of 5.2m/s. At the height of 125m above
the earth a package is dropped from a window. How much time it takes for the packet to reach
the ground?

Answers:
1-3.1m/s^2
2 180m
3 t=2.6s and v= 4.4m/s2
4 -36g
5 52m
6 2.4s
7v= 86m/s
11t= 5.6s

Challenge questions :
A stone is thrown up vertically upward with a speed of 18m/s. How fast is it moving when it
reaches a height of 11m. How long is required to reach this height? Why are there 2 answers.
