System of equations:
Perform row operations on your system to obtain a row-echelon form and the solution.
Equation sys:
x+y+z=3
x + 2y + 3z = 5
x + 3y + 4z = 4
Argument matrix:
R1------- 1 1 1 | 3
R2------- 1 2 3 | 5
R3------- 1 3 4 | 4
To get a row-echelon form, subtract R1 from R2 and convert into R2, R1 while R3 remains the same,
therefore,
R1------- 1 1 1 | 3
R2------- 0 1 2 | 2
R3------- 1 3 4 | 4
We then subtract R1 from R3 in order to change R3, R1 while R2 remains the same, therefore:
R1 ------- 1 1 1 | 3
R2------- 0 1 2 | 2
R3------- 0 2 3 | 1
We then subtract R2 from R1 so that it will change R1, R2 while R3 remains the same, therefore:
R1 ------- 1 0 -1| 1
R2------- 0 1 2 | 2
R3------- 0 2 3 | 1
We then subtract 2(R2) from R3 in order to change R3, R1 while R2 remains the same, therefore:
R1------- 1 0 -1 | 1
R2 ------- 0 1 2 | 2
R3 ------- 0 0 -1 | -3
We then multiply R3 by -1 in order to change R3, R1 while R2 remains the same, hence:
R1 ------- 1 0 -1 | 1
R2 ------- 0 1 2 | 2
R3 ------- 0 0 1 | 3
All of the above to gain 1 1 1 diagonally while 0s are at left of diagonal 1 1 1 and therefore equation:
R1 ------ x – z = 1
x – 3 = 1 (being z=3)
x-3=1
x=1+3
x=4
R2 ------ y + 2z = 2
y+6=2
y=2–6
y = –4
R3 ------ z = 3
x+y+z=3
4 + (-4) + 3 = 3 (using solution)
4–4+3=3
3=3
Or else:
x + 2y + 3z = 5
4 – 8 +9 = 5
5=5
Or else:
x + 3y + 4z = 4
4 – 12 +12 = 4
4=4
This implies that the system is consistent with one solution are independent.

Example with 2 equations
GeoGebra is a key instrument in approaching non-linear solutions as it makes it easy to spot and
visualize.
