COMPREHENSION – I (Q.No. 13-15)

Carbohydrates which differ in configuration of glycosydic carbon i.e., C – 1 in aldoses
and C – 2 in ketoses are called anomers. The carbohydrates which differ in configuration
at any asymmetric carbon atom other than glycosydic carbon are called epimers. The
diastereomers whose configuration differ at C – 1 are anomers. Epimers are also known
as configuration diastereomers. The specific rotation of α − D ( + ) glucose is +111 and
that of β − D ( + ) glucose is +19.2 ° . If each of α − D − glucose and β − D − glucose is
separately dissolved in water and allowed to stand, their specific rotation gradually
changes and reaches to a specific constant value +52.5° . This spontaneous change in
specific rotation of an optically active compound is called mutarotation. With dilute
solution of sodium hydroxide, glucose undergoes reversible isomerisation, to give a
mixture of D-glucose, D-mannose and D-fructose.
