MIDTERM EXAM (No 2)

Advanced Calculus
19ECE
Duration: 60 min

Problem 1.(7.5 points) Consider the function:

2 −y 2
z = f (x, y) = (5x2 + 3y 2 )e−x +2

(a) Find the local maximum, local minimum and saddle point(s) of z = f (x, y).

(b) Find the maximum and minimum values of the function z = f (x, y) subject to the given
constraint
x2 + y 2 = 4.

(c) Find the absolute maximum and absolute minimum values of the function z = f (x, y) on
the domain
D = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : x2 + y 2 ≤ 4}.

Problem 2.(2.5 points) Suppose that z = z(x, y) is an implicit function give by the following
equation
yf (yex , x + ln y) = y sin x − ez − 2z 3 ,
∂z ∂z
where f is differentiable. Calculate A = ∂x
− y ∂y with respect to x, y, z.
