THE PAST

Investigate the following:


Investigate about the simple past with the verb "To Be", in its affirmative, negative,
Interrogative, Yes/No Questions and Wh-QUestions.

All this is expressed in a single form: I was. We use was with I, he, she and it.
And we were for you, we and they.
Examples:
✓ She was in Lisbon last week.
✓ They were under the table

Add not after was or were.


We used wasn’t to say was not and weren’t for were not.
Examples:
✓ I wasn’t a good student.
✓ We weren’t wrong.

To ask questions in the past simple of the verb to be, you just have to put the verb first
and the subject after
Examples:
✓ Was he your favorite?
✓ Were you very nervous?

With the verb TO BE we first use the correct form of the verb in the past (was, were),
the subject and the complement:
Examples:
✓ Was I the last to arrive?
✓ Were they in the park?
The [wh- questions] always begin with an interrogative pronoun wh-, they serve to
show what kind of information is needed.
The structure of the questions wh- in the past tense are:
With an auxiliary verb:
Wh- question word + auxiliary verb (past form) + subject + verb +…?
Without an auxiliary verb:
What / Who + verb (past form) +…?
Which / Whose + noun + verb (past form) +…?
With a modal verb:
Wh- question word + modal verb (past form) + subject + verb +…?
Wh- question word + auxiliary verb (past form) + subject + modal verb + verb +…?
Examples:
✓ When was the Second World War?
✓ Why did she move to London?
