Vocabulary Strategy Awareness & Explanation (Purpose for selecting the strategy)
How will you provide students with a clear picture of the why and how?

By using a concept map, it allows for me to prompt students on how to analyze the words provided. It
can also be used to help differentiate the two words but breaking them down side by side, students are
less likely to mix them up when applying them to content. Concept maps can be referred back to
throughout a given unit to help students understand material. In this example, students would do this
activity in the beginning of a water properties unit, so having this concept map to refer back to as they
further learning will help make sure they can understand content.

Vocabulary Strategy Procedure-the “how-to”

Detail how you will introduce the vocabulary concept rooted in Latin/Greek roots, how you will propel
understanding of the generative use of these roots, and finally, how you will establish the proficiency of
the objective through an effective closing that can be assessed.

I will introduce this activity by first taking basic water properties notes and introducing them to the
words and context first. This activity will act as more of a supplemental breakdown they can use to
further help understanding and differentiation.

Peer Reflection: Enlist your partner in assessing your vocabulary activity in depth. Reflect on their
assessment before implementing the activity in your digital learning experience. (optional
implementation) They will be looking at a few factors:

1. A discipline-specific topic is identified and a clear and creative vocabulary activity is

created for one or two Latin or Greek roots.
2. The activity builds generative knowledge and allows the student to think critically about
the words.
Have your peer write a 1 paragraph detailed reflection about your strategy based on their own self-
assessment. (Please ask them to be honest as any critiques should be welcomed and reciprocated.
Additionally, your assessment does not impact their grade.)
● How did the structure of this strategy support learning in their discipline specifically?
● What were their strengths and areas for growth (please consider both their planning and your
instruction of the strategy).

This is my reflection for Hunter’s activity and he is turning his reflection for mine on his
planning sheet.

This activity was a piece of a bigger unit on political ideologies in a United States Government class. I
really enjoyed this activity and as I was working through it I could definitely see how this would help
students differentiate the ideologies from each other especially because so many of them are similar. I
would utilize this in the beginning of a unit when students first learn the vocabulary words while doing
the reading or initial notes. This gives students a way to further reinforce learning and it can be used as
a study tool throughout the rest of the unit. I used graphic organizers in classes often, especially social
studies and science. Overall, it was easy to use and helps to further understanding even beyond
government by incorporating language arts and root mean breakdowns.
