ABSTRACT SANTI TRISNANI (2004), The Influence of the Plot toward the Main Character’s Development in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Yogyakarta: Departement of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Sanata Dharma University. A Christmas Carol is one of Charles Dickens’ best novels of Christmas version that describe a journey of a stingy, greedy man named Ebenezer Scrooge led by three Christmas spirits to his past, his present, and his future life. He does not believe in Christmas, thus the journey showing the reality of his lives in the three scenes that ultimately turns him to be a kindhearted person. In this study, there are three questions that are formulated to guide the analysis. The first question is to understand the development of the main character that is described in the story. The second question is to reveal the plot and the appearance of the three spirits that are described in the story. The third question is to find out the influence of the plot toward Scrooge’s character development In order to accomplish the analysis, the library research is used since many data and theories are collected from some books, The formalistic approach is also applied. It is used to analyze the main character, observe the plot of the novel and examine the influence of plot toward the main character’s development. The analysis shows that Ebenezer Scrooge is a wealthy man who never associates with other people. His stinginess to others and disbelief in Christmas brings him to a journey of some events in his lives, led by three spirits of the past, the present, and the future. Through the journey he learns many important things, that is to change his behavior to honor people and Christmas day. The development of the character here is that Scrooge turns to be a kind and respectful person, While the influence of the plot here is that by the appearance of the three spirits of Christmas, Scrooge’s characteristic tums to be a more respectful person to everybody else and the existence of Christmas day.SANTI TRISNANI (2004). Perjalanan itu menunjukkan kenyataan hidupnya pada tiga pemandangan yang pada akhimya mengubahnya menjadi seorang yang baik hati Dalam studi ini, ada tiga pertanyaan yang dirumuskan untuk memandu analisis. Pertanyaan pertama adalah untuk mengerti perubahan karakter pada tokoh utama yang digambarkan dalam cerita tersebut. Pertanyaan ke dua adalah untuk mengungkap plot dan kehadiran tiga roh Natal yang digambarkan dalam cerita itu Peranyaan ke tiga adalah untuk menemukan bagaimana plot mempengaruhi perubahan karater tokoh utama Scrooge. Dalam tujuan untuk mcnyclesaikan analisis, digunakan metode kepustakaan karena banyak data dan teori didapat dari beberapa buku, Pendekatan formalistik juga digunakan, Pendekatan ini digunakan untuk menganalisa karakter tokoh utama, meneliti plot dalam novel, dan menganalisa pengaruh dari plot yang terdapat dalam cerita terhadap perubahan karakter tokoh utama. Analisis ini akan menunjukkan bahwa Ebenezer Scrooge adalah seorang yang kaya raya yang tidak pernah berhubungan dengan orang lain. Kepelitannya pada orang lain dan ketidak percayaannya pada Natal membawanya kepada perjalanan menuju beberapa peristiwa dalam kehidupannya, yang dipandu oleh tiga roh dari masa lalu, masa sekarang, dan masa yang akan datang. Melalui perjalanan itu ia mempelajari banyak hal penting. yaitu untuk mengubah sikapnya untuk menghormati orang lain dan juga hari Natal, Perubahan karakternya ada pada Scrooge yang menjadi orang yang baik dan penuh hormat, Sementara pengaruh dari plot disini adalah, dengan kehadiran tiga roh Natal itu, sifat Scrooge berubah menjadi seseorang yang lebih menghormati orang lain dan juga menghormati keberadaan hari Natal. xi
