3 CAPTION
Learning Material for Meeting 2.
Short Functional Text. Captions
The element of a publication that is often read first is the photo captions.
Writing photo captions is an important part of a photographer’s work. A photo
caption gives readers basic information to understand the photograph and it is
related to the news. Therefore, writing a photo caption should fulfil
professional standards of clarity, accuracy, and completeness.

Professional standard photo captions include:

 The identification of the people, the place of the event, and the date
when the photograph was taken in the first sentence, and
 Relevant information in the next sentence to help readers understand
the picture.

The photo and the caption complement each other. The photo provokes the
reader’s emotional reactions while the caption satisfies the readers’ curiosity.
Every caption should also intrigue the readers in a way that makes them look
back at the picture and the headline, and the deadline, and then read the whole
story.

Captions
A caption is a title, short explanation or description accompanying an
illustration or a photograph. Caption include a piece of text appearing on a
cinema or television screen as part of a film or broadcast. A title or heading of
a legal document or an article in a magazine is also called a caption. Captions
can be written in forms of works, phrases or sentences.
There are criteria for a good caption, as follows;
1. It clearly identifies the subject of the picture, without detailing the
obvious.
2. It is succinct.
3. It establishes the picture’s relevance to the article.
4. It provides context for the picture.
5. It draws the readers to the article.
