The Chinita Virgen

According to the Zulian tradition, the Chinita arrived in Maracaibo on the waves of the lake. The
story goes that one day in 1749, a simple woman had just washed her clothes on the shores of
Maracaibo Lake, when she suddenly saw a thin wooden board floating, which she picked up
thinking that it could be useful to cover the jar of water that he had in the corridor of his house.
The next morning, when she was making coffee, the woman heard a knock as if someone was
calling. She went to see what was happening and was overwhelmed with amazement when she
saw that the small board shone and that the image of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá appeared on it. For
this reason, the woman began to shout Miracle! Miracle !, hence the name of El Milagro from the
current avenue next to the lake, where the house of the laundress used to be. After what
happened, numerous people came to witness the prodigy, thus turning the humble woman's
house into a place of veneration of the Virgin by multiple believers.

It is for this reason that during these days, the bagpipe sounds with special frenzy and joy
throughout Zulia. Of the many festivals in honor of the Virgin.
