Socio-Cultural Issues
Socio-cultural refers to the characteristics embodied by a group of people
which includes language, religion, norms, and arts. The diversity of these groups of
people leads to problems and concerns. Among Filipinos, there are many socio-
cultural issues present and some are enumerated below:
1. Social Propriety (Hiya)
The Filipinos’ concept of shame affects their attitudes and behaviors
for they have the idea that there is an accepted standard to live and conform
upon. With this notion, Filipinos tend to exhaust their resources just to
avoid being embarrassed not only upon themselves but also with their
families. On the other side, this brings Filipinos hospitable for they aim to
please others’ standards.
2. Debt of Gratitude (Utang na Loob)
The concept of debt of gratitude is the necessity to repay a favor made
but this is not an ordinary debt for it is not quantified. The pay back usually
is in exchange with another favor that might not be always approving or
good and it may result to bias and corruption. Contrastingly, this shows how
caring and helpful Filipinos are to others.
3. Religion
Filipinos are very religious by nature and with this, it also brings
division amongst themselves. There are so many Christian Sects and Cults
that are not in good terms just because they have different beliefs and this
results to misunderstanding as they turn their backs from one another. On
a good note, with these array of religions comes special occasions that are
usually celebrated with festivities, thus, “Fiesta” are common in every town
throughout the different provinces.
4. Ethnicity
The Philippines holds a diverse number of ethnic groups having their
own rules, norms, and traditions and because of these, discrimination, feud,
and even war are not preventable. Cultural resource is one of the benefits of
having many ethnic groups. This will provide new vantage points,
experiences, and innovations as these group learn and understand one
another.
3
Economic Issues
Any problems or concerns related to the financial status and management of
resources of a country are considered as economic issues. The Philippines is not
exempted with these drawbacks, and here are some complications:
1. Poverty
The scarcity or unavailability of resources marks-up cases of poverty
not only in the Philippines but also in other countries. Those who are under
poverty line tend to commit crimes due to the poor access to any means of
resources. However, Filipinos are more likely to be resilient and self-
dependent in elevating themselves from their situation if they cannot get any
form of assistance.
2. Recession and Inflation
When there is a temporary economic decline and when there is an
increase of prices with most goods and services, recession and inflation are
present respectively. Loss of businesses and employments are common but
this teaches Filipinos to become frugal and watchful with their expenses.
3. Population
The number of individuals in a particular place can be statistically
measured as population. The increase of population may lead to problems
like unemployment, scarcity of resources and feuds but on the other hand
this may provide man power.
Political Issues
Government and people related problems are all under political issues.
There are also some political issues in the Philippines like:
1. Human Rights
Common human rights issue in the Philippines is the Extra Judicial
Killings(EJKs) related to “war on drugs” which led Filipinos question the
judicial system on the unlawful killings. With this idea, Filipinos became
more aware and knowledgeable with their rights as human beings.
2. Illegal Drugs and Crimes
The president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Roa Duterte, is at question
not only by local human rights advocates but also at a global scale with his
means of addressing drug related issues. However, with doubts and
uncertainties Filipinos are amenable that drug related cases are lower
compared with previous years.
3. Enhancing Peace and Development in Mindanao
Mindanao is still clouded with fear and terrorism in some of its
regions. There are still cases of bombing and illegal forces infiltrating the
work force of the Philippine Army with unavoidable casualties from both
parties. Nevertheless, peace treaties are still at work because Filipinos are
patriotic by nature.
