ELECTRICITY SAFETY TESTING DPP-FMS-BIO-004
Effective date: Review date: Version: Number of Page:

Applies To : Biomedical Engineering Department

PURPOSE:
1. Electrical safety testing for effective earth grounding, to provide protection for
patient, user, and equipment from shock and fire hazard.
DEFINITION:
1. Not Applicable

POLICY:
1. Preventive maintenance on electrical safety testing should be done according to
NEC standard.

PROCEDURE:
1. The resistance of the protective earth conductor is measured between the earth pin
on the mains plug and a protectively earthed point on the equipment enclosure
(see figure). The reading should not normally exceed 0.2Ω at any such point.
2. This test is conducted using a 50HZ current between 10A and 25A for a period of
at least 5 seconds. Although this is a type test, some medical equipment safety
testers mimic this method. Damage to equipment can occur if high currents are
passed to points that are not protectively earthed, for example, functional earths.
Great care should be taken when high current testers are used to ensure that the
probe is connected to the point that is intended to be protectively earthed.

Please refer to fig. 1 for measurement of protective earth continuity.

Limit: 0.2Ω
