ISE Ill Test 2 ~ Task 1 ~ Long reading
Read the following text about work and answer the 15 questions on the next page.
Are you really so busy?
Paragraph 2
Have you found yourself complaining about how busy you are, possibly to @ spouse, friend or co-worker? If you're like most
of us, you do this on 2 regular basis. You almost can’t help it, especially when others start talking about how busy they are
in their lives. it's e phenomenon referred to as “busy bragging” ~ a sense of self-importance that comes from how little free
time you have - and it's common throughout Western culture. Is that because, as a culture, we tend to value people who
are busy? Is it because we're afraid of looking lazy if we aren't as busy as our peers? Is it because we're fishing for more
congratulations and support for our work? Or are we stretching the truth to get out of some responsibility? Chances are,
it’s some combination of these factors. Stil it’s easy to blur the line between being busy and feeling busy.
Paragraph 2
So, how can you tell if you're not really busy ~- you're just busy bragging? The average full-time employed American works
47 hours per week. If you're working fewer hours than that, you're statistically less busy than the average person, That
doesn’t mean you should be eiming for 47 hours @ week ~ any more than 40, and you might be overstraining yourself. This
Is just a gauge you can use to compare yourself to the “average” population. Similarly, f you find yourself getting a full 7 to
8 hours of sleep every night, good for you ~ you're taking care of your body and setting yourself up to be more productive.
But at the same time, your schedule probably isn’t that full.
Paragraph 3
‘Away from work, the busiest people don’t have time to spend with thelr friends and loved ones. Their friends gradually drift
away from them, and their romantic relationships and femily bonds suffer. If you get to spend quality time with the people
‘most important to you on a regular basis (ie., 3 few times a week, or even every day), you're ahead of the curve. Not to
mention those who claim they're busy and then take all of August to relax at the beach. If you keep trudging through work
without giving yourself a chance to decompress and re-evaluate your life, your productivity will suffer, and you'll head
toward burnout. That said, if you have the time to take vacations regularly ~ at least a week’s worth of days off in a given
year ~ you probably fall squarely into “average” levels of busyness,
Paragraph 4
This shouldn’t suggest to you that being busy is a bad thing, or that you should make an effort to either increase or decrease
‘your workload. In fact, psychological research suggests that people are actually happier when they're busy than when they
have nothing to do. In one study, published in Psychological Science, researchers asked college students to take multiple
surveys about their school. After completing the first survey, students could either drop it off right outside the room they
were in, then wait idly until the next survey was administered, or keep busy by dropping off the survey at a location that
‘was about 15 minutes away. Either way, they were told they'd receive a candy bar when they turned in the survey, Perhaps
ot surprisingly, more students chose the closer location. However, students who kept busy by walking to the farther
location reported feeling happier afterward than did the students who remained idle.
Paragraph 5
‘So, expecting sympathy when telling people how busy you are might not work. if you're trying to stand out in your business
career, it could even backfire. Instead of being a badge of success, busyness may send the signal to your enlightened
colleagues and associates that you aren't working smart. If you knew how to be more efficient at your job, you could achieve
a better work-life balance. As entrepreneur Jason Fried writes in "Rework": "Workaholics aren't heroes. They don't save the
day, they just use it up. The real hero is home because she figured out 2 faster way." Google and 3M insist that their
‘employees have "free time” to work on their own projects. It's in these moments of idleness that your mind might stumble
upon a truly new idea.STEVETRINITYRESOURCES@GMAIL.COM

Text A
China Wiki - The Chinese Space Program
China's space program dates back to the 1950s, when China first started developing its own missiles,
modelled on those of the USSR. IMzo Zedong was impressed by the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and wanted
China to move forward quickly in the development of satellites. But these plans were postponed, and it was
ot until 1970 that China launched its first small satellite, long after the United States and Russia. Later, the
Chinese space program focused on practical applications, leading to the launch of the first Chinese
telecommunications satellite in 1984. Since then China has successfully developed civilian and military
applications, including meteorology and navigation satellites. However, more prestige-oriented projects, in
lunar and deep space exploration, and human spaceflight, were promoted in the 1990s. As a result, despite
China’s late entry into space exploration ~ the first Chinese astronaut was not sent into space until 2003 ~ it
has caught up lately at an impressive rate. By 2017, 1 taikonauts (a term used for Chinese astronauts) had
successfully orbited the Earth, demonstrating China's growing participation in space.
