Cooling Solutions

A Presentation by Tim Walter

What is Heat?

Heat is an unwanted byproduct!

Heat is mostly created through friction.
– e.g. by rubbing your hands,
when electricity is flowing through a wire, ...

Electricity, as we use it, is inefficient!
Relocate the excess Heat.

3 popular solutions for cooling:

– Fan

– Liquid cooling

– Passive cooling
Fan

How it works:
– generates a positive air pressure after the blades
and a negative before the blades (airflow).
– sucking in cold air at the front
– exhausting hot air at the back

Benefits and weaknesses:
– cheap and space saving
– noisy and not very effective
Liquid cooling

Consists of 3 main parts:
– The heatexchanger, one reservoir and piping

How it works:
– pumps coolant through crucial electronics and releases
the heat to the outside.

Benefits and weaknesses:
– very very effective
– could leak and damage
electronics
Passive cooling

How it works:
– utilises very much surface to transfer heat to the
surrounding air.
– can be combined with fans to speed up the process

Benefits and weaknesses:
– uses no power
– very very very slow
