2018 AFFIDAVIT OF LAURA LEIGHTON I Laura Leighton, under penalty of perjury, do herein declare swear, and affirm as follows: I am a retired paralegal and translator formerly employed by the City of Tucson. Iam a long time political activist, who marched for civil rights in the sixties and participated in the Tucson activist group--Arizonans for Immigration Reform—from 2000 onwards. T’ve researched the local Open Borders "Pro-Raza” activist groups, testified before the Arizona Legislature regarding serious abuses within the TUSD Raza Studies program, and participated in numer- ous “protect the border” demonstrations. ‘On March 6, 2004 I attended the "Glen Spencer Rally” held in Pre- sidio Park, Tucson Arizona. During that rally our group was assaulted, and tormented, by a group of masked “pro-raza” demonstrators who (1) physically as- saulted us and (2) screamed obscenities and various slogans in- cluding “kill the Gringo” and “send all white people back to Plym- ‘outh Rock.” One of the masked demonstrators “got right in the face” of 80 year ‘old Maydell Purvis who, in a defensive gesture, pulled the mask off her tormentor’s face; subsequently; Maydell was arrested and charged with assault. I asked one of the attending Tucson Police Officers to protect us, but he told me, in sum and substance, “I’m sorry about what is happening to you, but we were told not to intervene.” T have attended numerous “protect the border” rallies directed by Mr. Warden, and subsequently have testified in Tucson Municipal Court proceedings, and prepared a number of affidavits as to what T've witnessed. 10. lL. 12. 13. 14, 15. 16. On March 4, 2016 1 attended the “Justice for LaVoy Finicum” rally in front of the U.S. District Court, Tucson Arizona, and witnessed Cody Whitaker assault Roy Warden. Later, I watched video of a portion of that assault on a "You Tube Video.” During the event I asked an attending Tucson police officer to stop the assault because I was afraid for my physical safety. The police officer refused to intervene and told me “it is not an assault.” I was particularly concerned because TPD’s refusal to protect public safety reminded me of the similar event at the Glen Spencer Rally in 2004, when TPD also refused to protect public safety. ‘Subsequently; I testified in Pima County Superior Court proceed- ings arising out of that assault. Tam getting on in years and no longer recollect some of the spe- cifics which occurred during all the demonstrations I’ve participated in. However; the testimony I've given in court proceedings is the truth as I remembered it then, and the affidavits I signed were my truth- ful recollections of events I've witnessed.
