LESSON 1
PART 1: PHOTOGRAPHS (1)

A. Tactics
1. Always complete each items as quickly as possible so that you can preview the
photograph for next item. Don’t wait for the statement that says “Now look at
photograph number____”
2. If you are previewing a photograph that involves a person or people, look for
aspects of the photographs that are mentioned in the sentences:
• What are the people doing?
ü Active: cleaning, crossing, cutting, drawing, holding, jogging, loading, locking,
packing, pouring, pulling, pushing, selling, sitting, stretching, sweeping,
typing, watering, wrapping, leaning (against/on), performing, climbing, getting
on, getting off, taking off, boarding, point (at/to), staring at, gazing out,
arranging, measuring ……..
ü Passive: being + cleaned, cleared, displayed, dug up, handed locked, painted,
planted, piled up, stacked up, served, set up, towed, washed, watered, ,
fixed/repaired, wrapped ,……….
• Where are they?
ü In a construction zone, on the stage, in the lobby, at the reception desk, in a
conference, in the forest, on a boat/ship/plane/bus/train/plane/subway, in the
lift/elevator/escalator, on the street/road/avenue/ , in a supermarket, in an art
museum, in the gallery, in the swimming pool, on the sidewalk, in the field, in
the warehouse/laboratory/ garage/factory, at sea, on the beach, at the dock…..
• Who are they?
ü A man, men, a woman, women, a child, children, people, they, he, she, a
couple, a little boy, a girl, a baby, the group, the family, ……
ü (Is there a uniform or piece of equipment or anything else that indicates their
profession or role? ) a chef, a repairman, a tour guide, an office worker, a
receptionist, a clerk, a student, shop assistant, clerk, customer, driver,
passengers, commuter, pedestrian, policeman, worker, laborer, waiter,
waitress,
• What distinguishes them? (Is there a hat, a mustache, a purse, a pair of
glasses, a tie, or anything else that differentiates the people?)
• What do the people’s expressions tell you? (Do they look happy?
Unhappy? Excited? Bored? Upset?)
3. If you are previewing a photograph of an object, focus on these aspects:
• What is it?
Listening level 4 3
Duy Tan University

• What is it made of?

• What – if anything – is it doing?
• Where is it?
4. If you are previewing a photograph of scene, focus on these aspects:
• Where is it?
• What is in the foreground( the front of the picture)
• What—if anything – is happening?
• What is in the background (the “distant” part of the picture)?
5. Don’t mark an answer until you have heard all four choices. When you hear a
choice that you think is correct, rest your pencil on that oval on your answer
sheet. If you change your mind and hear a sentence that you think is better,
move your pencil to that choice. Once you have heard all four sentences, mark
the oval that your pencil is resting on. (This technique helps you remember
which choice you think is best.)
6. Try to eliminate choices with problems in meaning, sound, and sound +
meaning. (There is more information about recognizing these problems in the
main part of this lesson.)
7. Most correct answers involve verbs in the simple present (“The furniture looks
new.”) or present progressive tense (“The woman is riding a bicycle.”) Be
suspicious of answer choices involving any other tenses.
8. Never leave any blanks. Always guess before going on to the next item.
9. As soon as you have finished marking the answer, stop looking at and thinking
about that photograph and move on to the next item.

Preview Test Part 1

Start the audio program and read along as the directions are read.
Directions: For each item, there is a photograph in the book and four short sentences
about it on the audio program. The sentences are not written out, so you must listen
carefully.
You must choose the one sentence - (A), (B), (C) or (D) – that best describes what can
be seen in the photograph, then mark the correct answer.

B. Sentences with Meaning Problems

This is the most common type of distractor. Sentences of this type in some way
contradict what is seen in the photograph. Some common types of meaning
problems are listed below, but many other types are heard during the test.

Meaning problem Example

1. The sentence misrepresents the The photograph shows a man eating in a

eating out at a restaurant.”
2. The sentence misrepresents the The photograph shows peoples in light

10. The sentence misidentifies a The photograph shows a man walking

feature of the photograph. the background. The sentence says, “The
man is talking on the telephone.”

Exercise 1.2
Focus: Identifying distractors involving errors in meaning and recognizing sentences
with correct meanings.
Directions: Look at each of the photographs below. You will hear a number of
sentences describing each one. Decide if the sentence is true (T) or false (F) according
to what you see in the picture. There may be more than one true sentence about each
photograph, or there may be no true sentences.

Now start the audio program

4.

C. Sentences with sound problems

These sentences test your ability to distinguish similar-sounding words. These words
may rhyme (pile and file, for example) or they may sound alike in other ways (car and
card, for example, or lock and lake). Here’s an example: The photograph shows a man
taking a letter out of a file. The spoken sentence says, “He’s taking the letter from the
pile.” To avoid choosing the incorrect answer, you must be able to hear the difference
between pile and file.
Remember: If you hear a sentence with a sound –alike word, that sentence is not the
right answer.
Also remember that if you hear a sentence that seems strange or unrelated to what you
see in the photograph, it probably involves a sound problem, even if that problem is
not clear to you. These sentences will not be the correct answers.

Exercise 1.3
Focus: Identifying distractors involving sound problems and recognizing correct
answers.
Directions: There are two parts to this exercise. For Part A, look at the photographs
and listen to the sentences – (A) and (B) – about them. Mark the letter of the sentence
that best describes what can be seen in the photograph.

LESSON 2
PART 1: PHOTOGRAPHS (2)

A. Sentences with Sound and Meaning Problems

This type of item is more common than those involving sound problems. A sentence
of this type contains a sound-alike word, but the sentence is also an inaccurate
description of what can be seen in the photograph. For example, a photograph shows a
man putting a lock on his bicycle. One sentence says, “He’s blocking the path.”
Another sentence says, “He’s swimming in the lake”. In the first sentence, blocking
sounds like locking, and in the second sentence, lake sounds like lock. Neither
sentence describes what is happening in the picture.
Sentence of this type can be eliminated by either the sound-like word or the incorrect
meaning.

LESSON 3
PART 2: QUESTIONS - RESPONSES (1)

Format Part 2

This part of the test consists of thirty items. Each item consists of a stimulus on the
audio program followed by three possible responses, also on the audio program. Most
of the stimuli are questions, but a few may be statement. Your job is to decide which
is the best response. Between each item is five second pause. Part 2 problems do not
involve any reading skills; therefore, this part is considered a “pure” test of listening
skills. Your test book simply tells you to mark an answer for each problem.
Tactics Part 2
1. There are no answer choices to consider before or while the item is being read.
You should just concentrate on the questions or statement and the three
responses on the audio program, and pay no attention to the test book.
2. Try to identify the type of question (information question, yes/no question,
alternative question, and so on). The correct response, of course, often depends
on the type of question being asked.
3. Try to eliminate distractors.(Similar sounds, same words…)
4. Don’t mark an answer until you have heard all three responses. When you hear
a response that you think is correct, rest your pencil on that oval on the answer
sheet. If you change your mind and hear a response that you think is better,
move your pencil to that choice. One you have heard all three responses, mark
the oval that your pencil is resting on. (This technique helps you remember
which choice you think is best.)
5. If you hear all three responses and none of the three seems correct, take a guess
and get ready the next item.
6. There is very little time (only five seconds) between items in part 2. You need
to decide on an answer and fill in the blank quickly to be ready for the next ite
Preview Test Part 2
Start the audio program and read along as the directions are read.
Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear a question or statement on the audio
program. After that, you will hear three possible responses to the question or
statement. Each question or statement and each response is given-only once and is not
written out in your book, so listen carefully. Mark the answer that corresponds to the
best response to the question or statement.

(A)

The questions/statements you hear on this part of the TOEIC test can be broken
down roughly as follows:
Information questions (Wh- question)
Yes/ No questions
Other types of questions/ statements
Information questions begin with a wh- question word or the word how:
When can we begin?
Where’s the post office?
How are you today?
Yes/No questions begin with an auxiliary verb or a form of the main verb to be: i
Did Hiroshi attend the lecture?
Would you like to come with us?
Were you in Nairobi last year?
Other types of questions include embedded questions, alternative questions, tag
questions and negative questions. You may also hear statements.
Do you know who wrote this report? (embedded question)
Do you want to play chess or checkers? (alternative question)
You’ve been to Seoul before, haven’t you? (tag question)
Isn’t this interesting? (negative question)
A new manager has finally been hired. (statement)

Listening level 4 25
Duy Tan University

Focus: Distinguishing between information questions, yes/no questions, and other

types of questions.
Directions: Decide whether you hear an information question, a yes/no question, or
some other types ( embedded question, alternative question, tag question, negative
question, or statement) and then mark the appropriate blank. The first one has been
done as an example.

Listening level 4 26
Duy Tan University

LESSON 4
PART 2: QUESTIONS – RESPONSES (2)

There are three types of sound/meaning problems:

1. Sound-alike words: The question and one of the responses have words with
similar sounds but different meanings.(such as plane and plan in the first
sample item).

2. Words with multiple meanings: The question contains a word that has more
than one meaning. The word is used one way in the question and another way
in one of the responses (catch and catch in the first sample item).

3. Homophones: The question and one of the responses contains a homophone – a

word that has the same pronunciation but a different meaning (hear and here in
the second sample item).

Focus: Identifying distractors based on sound/meaning problems, and choosing

correct answers.

Listening level 4 27
Duy Tan University

Directions: You will hear a number of questions, each followed by three possible
responses to the questions. For each item, choose the letter of the response that best
answers the question.

Focus: Identifying common types of distractors for Part 2 items.

Directions: You will hear a question followed by a response. In each case, the
response is an inappropriate one. Choose the category that most correctly explains
why the response is not an appropriate one, and mark the blank
accordingly.

Listening level 4 28
Duy Tan University

Some responses are incorrect for the following reasons:

1. Incorrect verb tense
Where did Jacques go?
(A) He’ll go to the bookstore tomorrow.
The question asks about the past (did…go), but the response involves the
future. (He’ll go to the bookstore tomorrow.)
2. Incorrect person
Do you plan to go with her?
(A) Yes, she plans to
The question asks about you, so the response should use the word I or we.
Instead, it incorrectly involves the word she.
3. Response to the incorrect type of question

When did Maria leave?

(A) I think she went to the bank.

The question asks about time(When…..?), but the response provides a

destination (the bank). This responses is incorrect because it answers a
where……to? question, not a when………? question.

Were you here at noon?

(A) At a restaurant
The question asks for a yes/no reply, but the response answers an information
question. (Where were you at noon?”)
Do you want one scoop of ice cream or two?
(A) Yes, please.
The question asks the listener to choose between one scoop or two, but the
response is a simple affirmative. This is a proper answer for a yes/no question,
not for an alternative question.

Listening level 4 29
Duy Tan University

Focus: Identifying common types of distractors for Part 2 items.

Directions: You will hear a question followed by a response. In each case, the
response is an inappropriate one. Choose the category that most correctly explains
why the response is not an appropriate one, and mark the blank accordingly.
