WORKSHEET 1
CIRCLE
A circle is formed when a horizontal plane intersects a cone.
PARABOLA
A parabola is formed when a plane intersects only one cone to form an unbounded curve.
ELLIPSE
An ellipse is formed when a tilted plane intersects a cone to form a bounded curve
HYPERBOLA
A hyperbola is formed when a plane (not necessarily vertical) intersects both cones to
form two unbounded curve which are called branches of hyperbola.

WHAT’S IN
1. The absolute value of the difference of the distances of A(3.75, -3) from F1 and from F2
is 6.
Solution:
│AF1 – AF2 │= │9.25 – 3.25│ = 6
2. The absolute value of the difference of the distances of A(-5, 16/3) from F1 and from F2
is also 6.
Solution:
│AF1 – AF2 │ = │16/3 – 34/3 │ = 6

CIRCLE
Center C(h,k) and radius r
(x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 = r^2
Center at the origin C(0,0) and radius r
x^2 + y^2 = r^2
PARABOLA
Opening upwards with vertex V(0,0)
x^2 = 4cy
Opening upwards with vertex V(h,k)
(x-h)^2 = 4c(y-k)
Opening downwards with vertex V(0,0)
x^2 = -4cy
Opening downwards with vertex V(h,k)
(x-h)^2 = -4c(y-k)

WHAT’S IN
Hello! In lesson 1 I introduce to you the conic sections or conics as a particular class of curves
which oftentimes appear in nature and which have applications in other fields. One of the first
shapes we learned, a circle, is a conic. When you throw a ball, the trajectory it takes is a/an
Parabola. The orbit taken by each planet around the sun is a/an ellipse. Properties of hyperbola
have been used in the design of certain telescopes and navigation systems.
