FUNCTIONAL MINERALS FOR RUBBER
What is Mistron Vapor?
Mistron® Vapor products are cost-effective industrial minerals that perform in synergy with
clay, precipitated silica and carbon black. Mistron® Vapor products give formulators greater
flexibility, balancing the benefits of improved processability with the requirements of
product performance. Mistron® Vapor products are economical, functional minerals, not
extender fillers.

Mistron® Vapor defined

Mistron® Vapor is an ultra-fine, highly pure, hydrated magnesium silicate specifically
developed for the rubber industry. It has a platy and unique microcrystalline structure that
provides a higher surface area at the same fineness than macrocrystalline structure
products commonly found on the market.

Features of Mistron Vapor
• Mistron® Vapor is an extremely soft mineral with a Mohs hardness of one. This
property reduces wear on processing equipment compared with other
minerals. The planar surfaces of Mistron® Vapor are hydrophobic and
preferentially wetted by organic substances such as rubber. This is unique among
industrial minerals.
• Mistron® Vapor has a median particle size of approximately 2 microns and a
platy structure with a high aspect ratio, which is a key characteristic for
reinforcement rheology control and permeability resistance in thermoset
rubber.
• Mistron® Vapor is not hydroscopic, with less than 1% adsorbed water, which
allows it to be used in liquid-medium cure systems without encountering
porosity problems.
Mistron® Vapor R is a processing aid

• Mistron® Vapor R also functions as a processing aid in rubber providing:

• reduced mixing times lower compound viscosities
• improved extrusion rate and quality superior mold flow
• improved scorch safety reduced nerve
The oleophilic nature of Mistron® Vapor R allows rapid incorporation into rubber compounds,
thereby reducing mixing time.

Impact on Extrusion rate & Compound Viscosity

Mistron® Vapor improves extrusion rate and quality. For example, in black EPDM extrusion
compounds, extrusion output is improved by 20 percent with Mistron® Vapor RE compared to pure
carbon black compounds.

Mistron® Vapor RE reduces compound viscosity. This feature is demonstrated in EPDM with equal
volumetric replacement of carbon black by Mistron® Vapor RE. Mooney viscosity decreases 1 MU per
percent of carbon black replaced. Mistron® Vapor RE also provides greater processing latitude
because it increases scorch time without affecting cure rate in most compounds

Advantages for injection molding

Mistron® Vapor R reduces melt viscosity at the higher shear rates found in injection molding and
extrusion processing. Viscosities are 20 to 50 percent lower than with Precipitated Silica

Mistron® Vapor RE provides superior mold flow in injection molding, as demonstrated
using the mold shown, which has a diameter of 6mm and a length of 291mm.
Substituting 25% of the carbon black by Mistron® Vapor RE in an EPDM compound
also resulted in a significant reduction in the injection pressure (487 bars vs. 592)
required to fill the mold. This is not the case with quartz/kaolin at the same loading (591
bars vs. 592). Mistron® Vapor RE also improves scorch safety and lowers Mooney
viscosity.

The effect on mold flow with Mistron® Vapor RE can be demonstrated by

measuring the length filled at a specified injection pressure. The mold fill length
increased by 65% from 144 mm for quartz/kaolin to 238 mm with Mistron® Vapor

Mistron® Vapor Improves Cut /Tear Resistance

Mistron® Vapor improves toughness and durability of rubber goods by significantly

improving the cut/tear resistance of carbon black reinforced rubber. This is demonstrated
on tensile specimens cut with a razor blade across the surface to a depth of approximately
10% of their thickness to simulate a surface scratch.

Mistron® Vapor R Creates A Permeability Barrier

Mistron® Vapor R reduces the diffusion rate of gases and liquids in vulcanized rubber. This is
attributable to its platy morphology which increases the diffusion path. Mistron® Vapor R
substantially reduces air permeability in Butyl, Natural and Polyisoprene
