Experiment 4

Refraction through a prism

Aim:

 To trace the path of light ray passing through a prism for different angle of incidence
 To prove that : i + e =A + d
A = r1 + r2
Apparatus required:
A drawing board, A drawing sheet, a prism, drawing pins, geometrical instruments etc

Procedure:
1 Fix the white sheet of paper on a drawing board using drawing pins.
2. Place the glass prism in the middle of the drawing sheet and draw its boundary.
3. Remove the glass prism.
4. Mark a point on one of the refracting sides of the glass prism and draw a normal.
5. Draw an incident ray at an angle of 300 with the normal.
6. Fix two pins on the incident ray such that they are 5cm apart.
7. Place the glass prism back in its boundary.
8. Looking through the other refracting face of the glass prism, fix two more pins such that all
the pins are in a straight line.
9. Remove the glass prism.
10. Remove the pins and Mark those points.
11. Join the dots to the side and draw a normal at the meeting point.
12. Draw the refracted ray inside the glass prism.
13. Measure the angle of incidence, angle of refraction r1 & r2 and angle of emergence.

14. Repeat the experiment for angle of incidence 480 and 700

Result:
 i + e =A + d
 A = r1 + r2

Observation : ( Draw in the left blank space)
