ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING peeves TECHNICAL NOTE No. 3.2 egister DECK MOUNTED CONTAINERISED GENERATING SETS Deck mounted containerised generator sets are to comply with the following requirements with regard to the electrical equipment and installation. Container Environmental Protection ‘The containerised power plant is to be of a design appropriate to the situation in which it is to be used and its mode of installation is to take account of the conditions to be encountered in service. The combination of the container and individual equipment enclosures is to provide to the potentially live parts of electrical equipment a minimum protection of IPX6 as defined in IEC Standard 60529. (See also Technical Note 3.4 Equipment location and Ingress Protection.) This is to be demonstrated on test with the generator set in the quiescent and operating modes. If the container enclosure permits water to enter the container means of drainage is to be provided and the amount of water ingress is to be limited so that satisfactory operation of the electrical equipment is not impaired. Electrical equipment in the container is to be provided with enclosures to IPX4, Satisfactory means for protection against salt based corrosion are to be provided with adequate facilities to combat the effects of condensation and humidity that may occur during service. An adequate source of ventilation is to be provided for the generator and its prime mover in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements. Container Location and Sizing The container is to be sited in such a location or suitable equipment included to ensure that the generating set is not adversely affected by pollutants such as fumes, oil, exhausts, dust, seawater etc. The container is to be sited where it will not be subjected to flammable atmospheres. The deck load strength is to be adequate for the container including any fuel storage facilities incorporated, and also taking into account vibratory loads due to the operation of the generator. © Lloyd's Register EMEA 2008 1. cxbecamensan stg ag ty Dasa Ca oe The container is to be sized to provide an unobstructed space around the generator set sufficient to facilitate routine maintenance, without degrading the environmental protection provided by the container. Ventilation of the container is to be sufficient for operation of the generator without giving rise to ambient temperatures within the container in excess of those for which the equipment has been designed. Fuel Supply and Fire Protection Arrangements ‘The fuel storage and supply arrangements at the generator are to be suitable for the intended use of the generator, Fuel transfer arrangements are to comply with the Rules. It is to be possible to close the fuel valves from outside the container. Passive fire protection arrangements, fire detection arrangements and fire extinguishing arrangements are to comply with the Rules and SOLAS as applicable. It is to be possible to stop the ventilation from a location outside the container. Means of Communication ‘A permanent and efficient means of communication is to be provided between the generator container and the machinery control room. Container Lighting Normal and emergency lighting fittings and circuits are to be provided within the container in compliance with Part 6, Chapter 2, Section 5.7 of the Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships. Requirements for Alarms and Controls The containerised power plant is to be provided with alarm and control equipment, selected, designed and constructed in accordance with the general requirements of Part 6, Chapter 1 of the Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships. In particular the plant is to be fitted and equipped with the relevant alarms for auxiliary diesel engines, and communication and lighting features detailed above. Requirements for Electrical Equipment All electrical equipment mounted in the container is to comply with the requirements of the Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships Part 6, Chapter 2 and is to be suitably protected against the mechanical vibrations produced by the generator prime mover and other equipment mounted in the vessel. Electrical equipment is to be provided with facilities to combat the effects of damp air encountered in the application. This may be achieved by the use of suitable insulation, closed circuit cooling systems or other means, © Lloyal’s Register EMEA 2004 2 an Stings mana My Basen RCC Dac ene Ra oe Adequate control and indication devices are to be provided at the switchboard or other remote location to permit control of the power plant for the purposes of connection, isolation and synchronising of the generating set into the electrical network. The operation of any interlocks is to be tested, Where generating sets are fitted as additions to existing installations, calculations of short circuits at main switchboards, and distribution boards, are to be submitted, together with information on the short circuit capacity of existing circuit breakers and fuses in order to demonstrate that the protective device fault ratings are not exceeded. Generator power cables installed on deck, or in other locations where they are exposed to risk of mechanical damage, are to be protected by metal casing and the overcurrent protective devices of the generators are to be arranged to remove the generators excitation and shutdown the prime mover or disconnect the generator from the cable should there be a cable fault. For cables passing through bulkheads or decks, arrangements are to be such that the integrity of the bulkhead or deck is not impaired. The main switchboard is to be provided with a circuit breaker to provide isolation of the containerised generator and its connecting cables. For generators operating in parallel consideration should be given to having the voltage sensing of automatic voltage regulators, and other control devices, from a point of common connection, for example the main switchboard busbars. Arrangements are to be made to ensure that there is satisfactory kw and current sharing between generating sets operating in parallel and that the system is stable for all normal operating conditions. Plans In addition to the plans specified in Part 6, Chapter 1, Sub-Section 1.2 and Chapter 2, Sub-Section 1.2, the following plans are to be submitted in triplicate for consideration: a) General arrangement plan of the container showing location of the generating set and associated electrical equipment, ventilation arrangement and arrangements for environmental protection, b) Schedule of electrical equipment. ©) General arrangement plan of the vessel showing the location of the container in relation to any hazardous areas which may exist. © Los 's Register EMEA 2008 3 coining nly nens'OC Dek Ga Re
