Guide to Mixing Styles Successfully in your Room or Home

1. Room to be decorated: ____________________________________________________

2. Main furniture pieces needed for this room: ___________________________________

________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

3. Review the results of the 4 style quizzes you took throughout this course. Write down the
result of those quizzes; meaning, which styles do the quizzes say are best suited for you
and your home?

Traditional Style: ______________________________________

Casual Style: ___________________________________________
21st Century Style: ______________________________________
Retro-Inspired Style: ____________________________________

4. Now, decide which of these 2 styles that you like best. Some ways to determine this
answer includes – which styles do you gravitate towards? Which styles make you feel
happy and relaxed? Do you see any of these styles in your home currently? Once you
decide, go ahead and write down the 2 styles that you would like to use.

5. Next, decide which of these 2 styles you would like to be your primary style. Some ways
to determine this answer includes – which style are you more drawn to? Do you have
more of this style already going on in your home? Which style best fits your or your
family’s lifestyle? Meaning, if you have small children and/or pets, and your 2 styles came
from the “formal” and from the “casual” styles, you may want the “casual” style to be
your primary style. Once you decide, go ahead and write down your primary and
secondary styles here.

Now, let’s go ahead and begin designing in one of the main rooms of your home using these
two (2) styles. I usually like to start in the family/living room, as this is generally the most
used room in the home, but it’s definitely your choice. We are going to be using the 1-2-3
approach that I shared with you in the lecture titled “Design Partners”. Let’s get started!

Step 1: List all of the elements that these 2 styles have in common. (Use the “Style
Resource Guide” handouts contained in the “Resources” section of the applicable
sections to easily identify the common elements)

Step 2: Looking at your secondary style, review the main furniture pieces (e.g.,
chairs, sofas, coffee tables, side tables, and console tables) to determine whether or
not you have any of these pieces currently in your home. For example, looking at the
Traditional style, a classic piece that can be used is a club chair. If you have 1 or 2 club
chairs in your home, then this would be a great piece to incorporate into your room.
If you don’t, then consider adding it to your shopping list for the room. Write down
the 1-2 pieces that you will or would like to incorporate into your room here.

Step 2a: Looking at your secondary style, write down all of the typical accessories for
that style here, including artwork. You will ultimately select 2-3 accessories from this
style to include at the end of this exercise.

Step 2b: Next, write down the typical rugs and lighting fixtures used for your
secondary style. Review the rugs and lighting fixtures that you have in your home
currently. If you have any that will work, write those down here as a plan to use those
in this room, if they are size appropriate. If not, select the type of rug and lighting
fixtures that you will add to your shopping list.

Step 3: Looking at your primary style, review the main furniture pieces (e.g., chairs,
sofas, coffee tables, side tables, and console tables) to determine whether or not you
have any of these pieces currently in your home. If you don’t, then consider adding it
to your shopping list for the room. Write down the remaining furniture pieces that
you will or would like to incorporate into your room here.

Step 3a: Looking at your primary style, review the window coverings and
accessories, and determine whether or not you have any of these in your room. If yes,
you are all set, but if not, decide which ones you would like to incorporate.

Step 2a continued: Looking at the accessories you wrote down in question 2a

above for your secondary style, decide which 2-3 accessories you would like to include
in your room, first reviewing what you have available in your own home.

Final Step: Before you go ahead and make your final shopping list here for any items
you need to purchase, go ahead and create your own mood board in Microsoft
PowerPoint or another comparable program.

Review the way that all of your selections look together and if you are happy with the
way everything looks together, then create your shopping list, if needed. If not, then
look for other items that would fit that particular style from your lists above, and
keeping copying and pasting images in until you create a room that you love.
