DESCRIPTIVE REPORT OF THE PROJECT

1.- INTRODUCTION

The client owns a two-story building for commercial use, specifically a restaurant, located in Silver
Spring, Maryland. The building has on the second floor an area that despite having a roof will be partly
in the open, it is necessary the means of fire protection according to the relevant standards, therefore, it
has been decided to design a system of pipe sprinklers wet and dry pipe for the second floor in the
areas that are at the interperire and thus increase the reliability of building continuity and reduce the
risk to people and assets.

This descriptive report specifies the construction, installation and testing of the equipment necessary for
the formation of a complete firefighting system, operational and coordinated with the client in
accordance with the requirements of the applicable NFPA regulations.

3.- NORMS AND CONSULTED DOCUMENTS

For the development of this project, standards and publications of organizations specializing in fire
protection have been consulted, as well as praxis recommendations. Among the standards consulted
for the design of the systems, the following can be mentioned:

• NFPA 13, Automatic sprinkler systems.

• NFPA 13D, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family
Dwellings and Manufactured Homes.
• NFPA 14, Standard for Standpipe and Hose Systems.

DESCRIPTIVE REPORT OF THE PROJECT
• NFPA 45, Standard on Fire Protection for Laboratories Using Chemicals
• NFPA 70, National Electrical Code.
• NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code.
• NFPA 221, Fire Barriers Walls and Fire Barrier.
• NFPA 497, Recommended Practice for the Classification of Flammable Liquids, Gases, or
Vapors and of Hazardous (Classified) Locations for Electrical Installations in Chemical
Process Areas.
• NFPA 2001, Clean Agent Systems.

4.- DEFINITION OF THE RISK AND PHILOSOPHY OF PROTECTION

The area to be protected is a commercial building with two floors, a first floor with a total area of 4780
SF and a second floor with a total area of 3658 SF of which 2400 SF of area corresponds to an open
area with a sliding roof, considering that the use For a restaurant it will be understood that there will be
kitchen areas, warehouses, chairs and tables, bathrooms, food preparation areas, among others. It is
known that the locality where the restaurant will be located will reach temperatures close to -3 ° C,
therefore, said temperature is a factor to consider in the design of fire protection. The area with the
highest risk of fire is the restaurant kitchen, therefore, NFPA 13 defines the area to be protected as an
ordinary type 2 risk, which implies the use of a fixed fire sprinkler system, both wet pipe and dry. , so it
was decided to design a system that will contain upright and pendant sprinklers with a coefficient of K8,
3/4 "NPT and normal temperature for areas that do not belong to kitchens or cold rooms, for the kitchen
area that will contain pendant sprinklers with a coefficient of K8, 3/4 "NPT and extra high temperature
and for the cold room area dry pendant sprinklers with a coefficient of K5.6, 1" NPT and intermediate
temperature.

To assess the proposed system, a risk analysis has been carried out. This risk analysis is qualitative
and is based on the comparison with similar processes, the presence and elimination of chemical
substances and activities within the area to be protected. The selection of the suggested means of
protection is based on the accepted normative recommendations for these processes and at the
request of the client. The information shown is merely advisory and subject to review by the competent
authorities.

5.- PASSIVE PROTECTION RECOMMENDATIONS

The following recommendations reduce the risk of fire assessed by the client and the means of
propagation of fires, increasing the possibility of early detection and increasing the possibility of a
successful combat once generated. However, its application is not a guarantee of the elimination of
existing dangers nor does it constitute a a substitute for the active means of protection suggested to
reduce the impact of an incident on the property and people from the area owned by the client.

• Place portable extinguishing equipment where the norm indicates.

• Avoid, as far as possible, sources of ignition in the areas of greatest risk of fire.
• Properly store chemical or flammable products.

6.- SYSTEM COMPONENTS

6.1 Automatic Sprinkler System

The customer's fire system must have a direct adduction network from the city supply to the sprinkler
system, in a 4 "diameter pipe for the supply pipe and 2" for the carbon steel ASTM branch lines A53
grade A or B, SCH 40 certificate or similar for the wet pipe system and for the dry pipe system
galvanized steel pipe, with surface installation on supports each 14 feet maximum. All the pipes of the
network will be connected by means of slotted cast iron rigid joints with system of anti-rotation or
welding according to ASME IXA. All network components, accessories, valves and related products
must be UL certified and FM approved. The paint, the fasteners, among others, will be compulsorily
labeled according to the standards. The network, once installed, will be subjected to hydrostatic tests
and the tests carried out will be supervised and approved by the client. The inspection will be presented
to the competent authority for approval.

There will be two sprinkler systems, one corresponding to the wet pipe system that will be made up of a
4 "RISER that will contain the corresponding accessories according to the standard, and another dry
pipe system that will contain its respective 4" RISER with all necessary accessories. Sprinkler system
will have an application density of 0.20 gpm / Ft2 with a nominal factor "K" equal to 8 and normal
temperature (for areas that belong to kitchens or warehouses), "K" equal to 8 and additional high
temperature for the kitchen and "K" equal to 5.6 and intermediate temperature for cold rooms and a
protection area of 130 cubic feet and a maximum separation of 15 feet.

The operation of any of the sprinkler systems is as follows: the sprinkler system is a wet and dry type
system Automatic action, its feeding will be done through a main feeding tube connected to the city's
supply network. Under normal conditions, the pipes of the wet system are permanently pressurized with
water and the dry system will be prezurized with air and the sprinklers closed by a glass element. (bulb)
or fuse. When a fire occurs, the heat of the fire breaks the sprinkler bulb or activates the fuse element,
and the water is discharged immediately by those sprinklers activated, in the case of the dry system the
corresponding valve on the RISER will be opened so that the water passes and goes to the sprinkler or
open sprinklers. When a protected area is established by sprinklers. In case of fire, one or more
sprinklers are activated, the alarm is open, which allows the water to pass to the sprinklers open water
the flow is maintained until the shut-off valve of the RISER is closed. The passage of water to the
sprayer (s) must generate an audible local alarm signal of at least 95dB and the flow switch signal in an
alarm panel should be Monitored if one is maintained.

6.2 Pumping system

The fire water supply comes from the city, where values of the nearest hydrant were taken and it is
known to have a static pressure of 58 psi and a residual pressure of 62 psi and a water supply of 2353
gpm.

7.- CODING OF PIPES THAT CONDUCT FLUIDS

The red extinguishing pipe must be painted according to the standard. In case of special requirements
of aesthetics or finishes, it will be allowed to paint the pipe of another color, being obligatory to paint red
rings to it. Therefore, the base color will contrast with red. The direction of movement of the fluid should

be placed with a black or white arrow, in contrast to the basic identification color of the pipe. Any
pipeline independent of its vertical or horizontal position (underground and at any height) will be fully
painted with the basic identification color. It must have an adequate support, taking the corresponding
forecasts before a seismic eventuality.

8.- QUALITY OF MATERIALS AND LABOR

Due to the particular requirements of this project all accessories, valves, sprinklers, pumps, and related,
should preferably be listed UL and approved FM, or failing that, of first quality and specially designed
for fire service. Materials such as pipes, paint, anticorrosive protection tapes, metal angles and
structural elements, cement, among others, will be at least labeled, of recognized brands and
preferably with a NATIONAL certificate. The technical specifications attached to this report must be
respected. If there are deviations between the provisions of this document and the attached
documents, and the proposals of the contractor (s) that will execute the works, they must be previously
consulted with the client and the design engineer. It is understood that, for the purposes of the
execution of this engineering, contractors must verify experience in installation of fire systems. The
possible omissions of the documents presented are not such. The installer must be required to be
aware of the NFPA standards related to the purpose of this work.
