Activity # ____: Electro 1, 1st Sem. 2021-2022

Topic: Generators and Alternators

Learning Outcome:
Explain the difference between the principle of operation of a basic DC generator from and
AC generator.
Section BSME – 1 ALPHA Date: 23/11/21
Name Kio Joriz P. Hernandez Score:
Time 11:45 PM
Remarks Individual, AC. Generator (1) , D.C Generator (1)

1. Enumerate different parts of a D.C generator.

1. Stator - is the stationary part of a motor, it provides a rotating magnetic field that
drives the armature to rotate.
2. Rotor or Armature Core- that is consisted of a fan, armature, commutator, and a
shaft.
3. End Housings - are the components attached to the ending parts of the
mainframe with a function to protect the bearings.
4. Bearings - are used in a system to achieve a smooth movement between the
different components.
5. Yoke - is the outer cover that not only provides mechanical protection to the
whole inner assembly and fixes them to the foundation of the machine, but also
creates a path for the magnetic flow that the field winding produces.
6. Poles - are used primarily to keep windings in the sector.
7. Pole Shoe - is an iron or steel plate that used primarily to disperse the magnetic
flow and avoid the spinning field coil from falling.
8. Commutator- is like a rectifier to convert AC voltage to DC voltage in the
reinforcement of the armature winding.
9. Brushes - are one of the essential parts of the DM generator. With the aid of
these carbon blocks, the electrical connection between the commutator and the
external load circuit can be assured.
10. Shaft - is a mechanical piece in a DC machine that produces the rotational of
a force known as torque and brings about rotation.
11. Magnetic Field - This is a permanent magnet that generates a magnetic field
that is used to rotate the coil.
12. Armature Windings - For holding the armature windings, the armature core slots
are primarily used. They are connected in a closed-circuit winding form in series
to increase the amount of produced current; and they are parallel.

2. Enumerate different Parts of A.C generators.

1. Field - consists of coils of conductors that receive a voltage from the source and
produce magnetic flux.
2. Armature - This component primarily consists of coils of wire that are large
enough to carry the full-load current of the generator.
3. Prime Mover - could either be a diesel engine, a steam turbine, or a motor.

4. Rotor - The generator’s prime mover drives the rotor.

5. Stator - comprises a lamination of steel alloys or magnetic iron to minimize the
eddy current losses.
6. Slip Rings - are electrical connections used to transfer power to and fro from the
rotor of an AC generator.

3. Based on your observation How to distinguish AC generators from DC generators

and vice versa.

Base on my observation, In AC generator, power produced in generator is taken out

directly through sliprings & brushes, which are further connected to output circuit
while In DC generator, commutator is mounted on the shaft of generator through
which AC produced in generator is converted to DC. Commutator is connected to
output circuit through brushes.
