“PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY BACHELOR OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITY OF RIZAL SYSTEM – ANGONO CAMPUS IN
DISTANCE LEARNING” Theoretical Framework This study was anchored on Mwanza and Engestrom's Activity Theory and Vygotsky's constructivist learning theory related to teaching in distance learning. Distance learning, which is defined as structured learning in which the student and instructor are separated by time and place, is currently being employed as a mode of education in the Philippines. Students are not required to be physically present with the instructor in place, which is a huge benefit for non-traditional students who are unable to attend classes at certain hours. Despite the benefits of distance learning, there are some problems that students encountered that must be addressed. The activity theory is a theoretical framework that has supported the growth of distance education (Mwanza & Engestrom, 2005). The interaction between humans and technology tools such as smartphones and laptops is the emphasis of this theoretical approach. This theory emphasizes the potential impact on teaching and learning utilizing new tools as vehicles for modernizing, and modifying activity methods, and it played an important part in learning expansion employing instruments, tools, and so on (Engestrom, 1987). Vygotsky's constructivist learning theory underpins distance learning. The evolution of learning and social interaction was the focus of this hypothesis (Cole & Wertsch, 1996). Attwell (2010) looked into Vygotsky's ideas about technology-enhanced education and personal contextual learning. Other psychologists have suggested that intellectual and physical growth do not occur independently of the environment in which they are raised, therefore these theories are related to this study (Bozhovich, 2004). The Covid-19 Pandemic shifted the entire educational process online, and most colleges throughout the world have transitioned to e-learning. In our instance, we are in our second year of distance learning. As a result, the focus of this research is on the problems that students faced during the pandemic and what might be done to help them avoid them.
