What is a search engine?
a program that searches for and identifies
items in a database that correspond to
keywords or characters specified by the
user, used especially for finding particular
sites on the World Wide Web.
Advantages
● Access to vast information
● Power house of knowledge and education
● Free access
● Time saving
● Relevant results
● Advanced search privileges
Ethical implications: Biasness

Pro: Certain websites can pay the search engines so that


their page comes first on search results. Thus, a good
business move.
Cons: Not every sites are able to achieve this.
Ethical implications: Cybersecurity and privacy breach

Pro: Secures us from malware and viruses.


Con: Collection of personal information and potentiality
of data breach.
Ethical implication: Democracy, Censorship, and the Threat to
Liberty and Freedom

Pro: During political tension in the country government can restrict the
spread of propaganda in social media.
Con: Addressing the concern restricts us from freedom of speech and
usage of internet.
Ethical implications: Creative thinking

Pro: Fast and easy access to vast ocean of knowledge.


Con: Easy access causes tardiness and thus restricts creative
thinking.
What can be concluded from this?

Hinman (2008, 75) argues that search engines “contribute


significantly to the social construction of knowledge”—i.e., not
only do they provide access to knowledge, but they also
increasingly “play a crucial role in the constitution of
knowledge itself.”
