UNEXPLODED ORDNANCES

As numerous Unexploded Ordnance and bombs remaining in Liberia

pose danger to local population as well as International workers,
Pakistani Peacekeepers organized on 11th February, 2006 a UXO
demonstration to raise people’s awareness of the risk of UXOs.

About 450 people from school children to local administration officials

to UNMIL civilian staff attended the demonstration held in
Tubmanburg to understand the dangers posed by various kinds of
ordnance and bombs and learn what to do if they find them in the bush
and elsewhere. Some of these people came from Monrovia because they
considered the demonstration very important to all Liberians. The
Team Leader of UN Police Induction Training Unit and his team were
in attendance. Their presence was necessary to enable them update
their Lecture on Mine Awareness meant for newly arrived UN Police
officers. A team of Pakistani Engineers gave the audience a lecture,
demonstrated how the Peacekeepers handle UXOs and exploded a
bomb to show how dangerous it could be.

The Commander of PAKBATT 3, in his address, told the people that no

serious UXO related accident involving Peacekeepers has been recorded
in Liberia since inception of this Mission on Oct. 1st , 2003 and that this
was due to awareness and safety precautions observed at all times by
Peacekeepers.

‘’’Don’t touch it’ was the message we want to deliver to you people in
our area’ said Maj. Ahmed, Public Information Officer of Pakistani
Battalion 3 in Sector 2, who addressed the people after the Commander
had left the podium. He told them that UXOs are a serious threat to
UNMIL troops and aid workers when they patrol remote areas, deliver
humanitarian aid or develop community infrastructure. He hoped that
everyone appreciated the Pakistanis’ efforts in creating the people’s
awareness.
In year 2005, PAKBATT 3 disposed 310 UXOs and 38,100 rounds of
small ammunitions in its area of responsibility in Sector 2.
