Similary if we consider a situation in the organization, Ramesh is also a

supervisor in a marketing firm, and he has put together a team of people who have
all worked at the company for many years. In this case, the team members have good
communication and can get their tasks done by themselves. As such, Ramesh has less
influence because they do not need a leader to come in and tell them what to do or
how to do it. This is an example example of a substitute for leadership which is a
team that works very well together.

Further, Ramesh decides to reward his employees with an ''Employee of the Month''
award; however, team members do not really care if they earn the award or not. In
this case, the fact that the employees do not strive to achieve the reward takes
away from Ramesh's leadership. This is an example of nautralizer, because the
reward did not necessarily increase or decrease the performance of the team.

some situations have so many neutralizers that it is difficult or impossible for

any leader to succeed. In this event, the
remedy is not to replace the leader or provide more training, but rather to change
the
situation. One approach is to make the situation more favorable for the leader by
removing neutralizers. For ex, if the team feels that the tasks involved are of
easy nature, the leader in order to make the employees strive for th reward could
make the tasks more challenging. Another approach is to make leadership less
important by increasing substitutes.Substitutes for leadership behavior can clarify
role expectations, motivate organizational members, or satisfy members (making it
unnecessary for the leader to attempt to do so)
